Colbert overcame adversity at age 10 when he was living in Wichita Falls, Texas. While racing a friend on his bike, Colbert ran a stop sign and was hit by a car, went through the windshield and suffered life-threatening injuries, falling into a coma for more than a week. His father, Adrian Sr., became motivated to make a change and moved them 90 miles south to Mineral Wells to escape from the gang environment that Adrian Sr., was a part of in Wichita Falls. After moving to Mineral Wells, Colbert didn’t quite feel at home, but found additional support from the Clarke family, who treated him like a son of their own. Colbert was introduced to the family when he was approached by one of the three daughters in the family, Katy, asking if he needed a ride while walking the three miles home from school. He became part of their family, referring to them as parents and sisters, and even put his number in Mrs. Clarke’s phone as ‘Adrian – my adopted son.’ “It made it easier for me to call [Mineral Wells] home,” Colbert said. “Not only having my family, but a family that was already established here that loved me just like my family loved me.”
