Cooper Kupp kommt nach Hause!
Der 31-jĂ€hrige Receiver, gebĂŒrtig aus dem Herzen des US-Bundesstaats Washington, wechselt nach acht Jahren bei den Los Angeles Rams in seinen Heimatstaat zurĂŒck. Die Seahawks haben mit ihm einen Star nach Seattle geholt, der alles mitbringt, um der nĂ€chste Publikumsliebling im Lumen Field zu werden.
Hier erfĂ€hrst du drei GrĂŒnde, warum Kupp und die Seahawks perfekt zusammenpassen.
1. Cooper Kupp kehrt zurĂŒck in seine Heimat
Der Receiver wuchs in Yakima auf, einer Stadt in Zentral-Washington, rund 200 Kilometer sĂŒdöstlich von Seattle. Sein erstes Seahawks-Spiel besuchte er 2006 mit 13 Jahren. Das Heimteam besiegte damals in einem Montagnachtspiel im Schnee die Green Bay Packers.
Dass Kupp irgendwann mal selbst in der NFL auflaufen wĂŒrde, war zu diesem Zeitpunkt höchstens der Traum eines kleinen Jungen. Als Footballspieler zog es ihn nach der Highschool an die Eastern Washington University, die ganz im Osten des Bundesstaats in Cheney fast an der Grenze zu Idaho liegt.
Bevor Cooper Kupp Washington verlieĂ, um bei den Los Angeles Rams durchzustarten, stellte er an seiner Uni zahlreiche College-Football-Rekorde in der zweithöchsten Spielklasse der USA (FCS) auf.

Seine 428 Catches, 6.464 Receiving Yards und 73 Touchdowns fĂŒr die Eastern Washington Eagles ĂŒber vier Spielzeiten hinweg sind alle bis heute FCS-Bestwerte.
Sie wĂ€ren ohne die bedingungslose UnterstĂŒtzung von Cooper Kupps Ehefrau Anna, ebenfalls gebĂŒrtig aus Washington, wohl nie zustande gekommen. Die beiden lernten sich bei einem Leichtathletik-Wettbewerb kennen, an dem beide fĂŒr ihre Highschools teilnahmen. Auch Anna schrieb sich spĂ€ter an der Eastern Washington University ein, um nĂ€her bei ihrem Partner zu sein.
Fun Fact: Die Eagles spielen in ihrem Stadion, dem Roos Field, auf einem roten Kunstrasen und sind damit eines von nur zwei Teams auf dem Division-1-College-Niveau, das keine grĂŒne SpielflĂ€che nutzt.
Auf dem Campus der UniversitĂ€t in Cheney verbrachten ĂŒbrigens die Seahawks von 1976 bis 1985 und dann wieder von 1997 bis 2006 ihr Training Camp. Heute findet das Trainingslager auf dem TeamgelĂ€nde in Renton, dem Virginia Mason Athletic Center, statt.

2. Er kennt die Seahawks so gut wie kaum jemand
Zumindest als Gegner. Cooper Kupp erzielte in zwölf Spielen fĂŒr die Rams gegen die Seahawks starke 70 Catches fĂŒr 815 Yards und fĂŒnf Touchdowns. Allein deshalb schon ist es gut, dass er jetzt die Seiten gewechselt hat.
Zuletzt machte Kupp Seattle am 3. November 2024 das Leben schwer. Seine elf Catches fĂŒr 104 Yards brachten Los Angeles in eine gute Ausgangslage, um das Spiel am Ende in der VerlĂ€ngerung zu gewinnen.

SchwĂ€chen der Seahawks-Defense, die er frĂŒher in Spielen ausgenutzt hat, kann er ab sofort im Training aufdecken und damit seine Mitspieler noch besser machen. SchwĂ€chen der Rams-Defense kann er jetzt ausnutzen und mit seinen neuen Teamkollegen teilen.
Aber zurĂŒck in den November 2024: Ebenfalls mit einem starken Auftritt an diesem Tag: Seattles Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Der junge Receiver legte sieben FĂ€nge fĂŒr 180 Yards und zwei Touchdowns auf. Er dĂŒrfte in den kommenden Monaten stark von seinem neuen Kollegen profitieren.

Sowohl Kupp als auch JSN glÀnzen, besonders wenn sie aus dem Slot heraus agieren, also zu Beginn des Spielzugs eher in der Feldmitte zwischen Offensive Line und Wide Receiver aufgestellt sind.
In LA hat der 31-JĂ€hrige sein Handwerk perfektioniert. Flinke FĂŒĂe, schnelle Richtungswechsel und eine brillante Nase fĂŒr freie RĂ€ume sind entscheidend fĂŒr den Erfolg im Slot â Kupp hat alles davon und kann einem mindestens genauso talentierten Youngster noch den ein oder anderen Trick mitgeben, um die Verteidigung zu lesen.
3. Der Receiver hat die Underdog-MentalitÀt
Vom ĂŒbersehenen Highschool-Spieler zum Super Bowl MVP â was wie ein MĂ€rchen klingt, ist tatsĂ€chlich die unglaubliche Geschichte von Cooper Kupp.
Nach dem Ende seiner Highschool-Laufbahn stand er ohne ein einziges Stipendium da. Dabei hatte er sich so sehr gewĂŒnscht, an der Elite-Uni Yale zu studieren. Die guten Noten dafĂŒr hatte er â und ein Scout tauchte bei einem seiner Spiele auf. Als dann wenig spĂ€ter der Anruf mit der Absage kam, hatte Kupp seinen einzigen Interessenten verloren.

Kupp war ein SpĂ€tzĂŒnder, der nie atemberaubend schnell war. WĂ€hrend sein Vater Craig und sein GroĂvater Jake den Sprung in die NFL schafften, wurde Cooper nicht einmal fĂŒr gut genug befunden, um am College zu spielen.
Erst drei Wochen nach seinem letzten Highschool-Spiel bot die Eastern Washington University dem mit null (0!) Sternen bewerteten Nachwuchsspieler dann doch noch ein Stipendium an. Klar nahm Kupp das Angebot an â und ĂŒberlieĂ ab sofort nichts mehr dem Zufall.
Der Receiver stellte sich an seiner neuen Uni mit den Hausmeistern gut, denn sie waren es, die ihm frĂŒh morgens fĂŒr eine Extraschicht die Trainingshalle oder den Meetingraum aufschlossen. Er verschwendete keine Sekunde.
Diese Arbeitseinstellung liebten auch die Los Angeles Rams, die in einem Interview mit ihm das GefĂŒhl bekamen, sie sĂ€Ăen einem Receiver-Trainer gegenĂŒber, der alle Facetten der Position kennt. Kupp schien schon vor Beginn des Spielzugs fĂŒr alles einen Plan zu haben.

Vielleicht hatte er das GefĂŒhl, so gut vorbereitet sein zu mĂŒssen. Das, was ihm an Speed fehlte, bĂŒgelte er mit Köpfchen, prĂ€zisen Laufwegen und mit flinken Richtungswechseln aus. Sean McVay, der Head Coach der Rams, musste einfach zuschlagen: In der dritten Runde des NFL Draft 2017 holte er Kupp.
634 Catches fĂŒr 7.776 Yards und 57 Touchdowns spĂ€ter verlĂ€sst das 0-Sterne-Talent aus Yakima seine erste Profi-Heimat Los Angeles als NFL-Legende. Unvergesslich war seine Saison 2021 mit 145 Catches fĂŒr 1.947 Yards und 16 Touchdowns â allesamt Bestwerte in diesem Jahr und starke Argumente fĂŒr die Wahl ins All-Star-Team der Liga und zum Offensivspieler des Jahres. In der gleichen Spielzeit wurde Kupp Super Bowl MVP, nachdem er in den Playoffs 33 PĂ€sse fĂŒr 478 Yards und sechs Touchdowns in vier Spielen gefangen und die Rams auf Meisterschaftskurs gebracht hatte.
Die beste NFL-Saison eines Receivers aller Zeiten? Es fÀllt schwer, viele Argumente dagegen zu finden.
