The Seahawks added safety depth, as expected, ahead of their season-opening game against the Patriots.
Safety AJ Finley was signed off the practice squad to the 53-man roster, while safety Rodney Thomas II and running back Velus Jones Jr. were elevated from the practice squad.
Guard Bryce Cabeldue was waived to make room for Finley on the 53-man roster.
The Seahawks needed safety depth with starter Ty Okada ruled out due to a hamstring injury, and with safety/nickel defensive back Nick Emmanwori, who is working his way back from ankle surgery prior to camp, listed as questionable.
Thomas, an offseason free-agent addition who started 26 games over four seasons with the Colts, or Finley, who first joined the Seahawks as a waiver claim in 2024, then re-signed this offseason, is likely to start in Okada's place alongside starting safety Julian Love.
"Readiness," defensive coordinator Aden Durde said when asked what he's seen from the practice squad safeties. "They breathe confidence into us as coaches, play callers, head coaches. Everyone sees the work they put in, and they're ready to take the opportunity that arises when it comes up."
Said Macdonald, "Everybody that's practiced with us and been here throughout camp, we're excited with where they're at, we feel like they could contribute to us playing great football."
