In January, Vinod and Neal Khosla attended a game at Lumen Field, making the trip to Seattle for the Seahawks' divisional round playoff game against the 49ers.
And from Rashid Shaheed's touchdown on the opening kickoff, to the crowd remaining passionate through the fourth quarter of a blowout win, the Khoslas were blown away by the experience.
Granted, it wasn't what they were hoping to experience at the time - given that they previously held a minority stake in the 49ers - but now that the Khosla family has taken over ownership of the Seahawks, a transaction that became official last week, they are thrilled to be a part of an organization that not only is coming off a Super Bowl victory, but that boasts such a unique connection with its fans.
"That game really brought home to us the power of the 12 brand," Vinod Khosla said. "Literally how passionate a fan base it is. I never realized how popular a brand the 12s are, so that's very exciting… I would say the biggest impression was that Lumen Field is an iconic venue, the loudness, how exciting and energetic it was, and of course the 12s."
Neal Khosla added, "My dad and I came to that game, and we'd never been to Lumen before. Obviously, the Seahawks had a very good game, and we're sitting there in the fourth quarter, and it was still so loud. One of my reflections coming out of that was that I don't know that I've ever been in a venue this loud and this passionate. And it's a 30-point game in the fourth quarter. You see how special the fan base is. I think we walked away going, 'Oh, my God, this is built different.
"That was the first cue to us that this franchise has something really special in how it's connected to the community and what the fan base is, and how they show up for games and ultimately how that helps the team on the field."
Vinod Khosla, who holds the title of chair of the Seahawks and First & Goal LCC, met with the media on Wednesday along with his wife, Neeru Khosla, the controlling owner of the Seahawks and president of the Seattle Charitable Foundation, and their son, Neal Khosla, vice chair of the Seahawks and First & Goal LCC.
All three spoke about their reasons for getting into the NFL, about how the Seahawks can continue to make a big impact in the community, and about how they plan to operate as owner. And yes, they also announced some exciting uniform news for the 2027 season. And one of the clear themes of the Khoslas messaging was that they understand they are taking over a pretty special organization and have a lot of respect for those who came before them.
"I love the idea of legacy, as you might guess," Vinod Khosla said. "This history matters a lot, and the Nordstroms first and then the Allens did an amazing job of building a loyal community. And hopefully we can be good stewards and match up with their achievements there."
The Khosla family has called the Bay Area home for decades, and Vinod and Neeru have lived in the same home since 1986, so they will not relocate to Seattle, but they will be around often. They do not, however, plan to come in and start telling general manager and president of football operations John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald how to run a football team.
"I think our approach will be to have great management," Vinod Khosla said. "We do have great management. They got us to the Super Bowl… So the best thing we can do is not mess with a lot, but we will be working closely with management. I don't think our approach is going to be telling them what to do; our approach will be lots of discussions and then leave it to management to decide, whether they agree with us or not. So I'm very much a fan of handing them the baton and let them do their thing and take responsibility for the results, which hopefully is another Super Bowl very soon, this year.
"You always want to have lots of discussions, lots of ideas, lots of debate. But then the people in charge of executing should have the baton to make the decision, because if they haven't made the decision, they won't be as committed to it. That's a very important management philosophy. The person responsible for executing should buy into the decision and make the decision after plenty of debate and ideas and interaction."
Added Neal Khosla, "For me, I'm coming in with a mindset of, these are brilliant minds when it comes to football, so, what can I learn from them?"
Another important part of the Khoslas vision for running the franchise is that they want it to feel like an extension of their tight-knit family, which also includes Vinod and Neeru's three daughters, Anu, Nina, Vani.
"As a family, you'll find we're very approachable," Vinod Khosla said. "Nothing fancy. We don't like fancy stuff."
At which point, in one of the more humorous moments of the press conference, Neal interjected to remind his dad that he was wearing a custom Seahawks jacket and sneakers he designed with AI and had custom made in Italy.
"He had his jacket shipped from Italy, what are we talking about here?" Neal Khosla quipped.
Vinod Khosla then continued, "We're a very, very close family, and I do think a team like the Seahawks can be an extension of the family. If you ask me three or four years from now what I hope to achieve, it's that the team operates like a family and is an extension of the family. It dramatically improves the quality of life if you have an extended family that truly cares. That's what I hope we can get to over the next couple of years is to operate like an extended family."
And in true family form, the Khoslas don't envision a ton of division in their roles aside from Neeru's focus on the community and nonprofit side of the team's work.
"We are a super close-knit family," Vinod Khosla said. "If you want to know us, we're very close, and we will probably operate relatively interchangeably as an office of the chairman and not have any specific things.
"Now Neeru is very passionate about education. She's had a nonprofit in education for 20 years, which serves 30 to 40 million children worldwide every year. And millions of students are using her AI Tutor every single month. She'll be more focused on the community efforts and some of the foundation efforts for the Seahawks Foundation. Neal and I will probably operate relatively interchangeably. We stay in close touch. We talk every single day, practically. We hang out a lot together. So you'll see us operate as if we are one entity."
Vinod also talked about how Khosla Ventures makes what he calls impactful investments, and that does and doesn't tie in with his newest venture as an owner of an NFL franchise.
"Each (investment) is something I'm passionate about doing, and that will come across—I would say we're one of the few firms where impact is probably as important as investment returns," Vinod Khosla said. "I like to say my business goal is to have good enough investment returns so we can keep getting licensed to do the impact.
"So, a wide range of impactful things in a number of areas, all based on technology, but I don't think it intersects with football in any major way. Football is a passion. I fell in love a long time ago with the NFL, nd Neal and I have been football fans for a very long time."
And for Neal Khosla, that love of the sport is most obvious explanation for why his family wanted to purchase the Seahawks in the first place, especially after the memorable experience at Lumen Field eight months ago.
"It's the best sport in the world, and it's the best fanbase in the sport and in the world," he said. "That simple."
