With Quenton Nelson Joining The Seahawks, A Look Back At John Schneider's Previous Midseason Trades

The Seahawks have had a lot of success adding players in midseason trades under general manager and president of football operations John Schneider, and they made another big trade Tuesday.

Since becoming the Seahawks' general manager in 2010, John Schneider has done a lot of things well while helping build two Super Bowl-winning rosters and helping lead the franchise to 11 playoff appearances, six division titles and three Super Bowl appearances over the past 16 seasons.

From nailing multiple drafts, including the 2022-2025 drafts that added several key players to last year's Super Bowl-winning roster, to making some great signings in free agency, including the additions of Sam Darnold, Cooper Kupp and DeMarcus Lawrence last year, to scouring the waiver wire for diamonds in the rough, Schneider and his player personnel department have found plenty of ways make the Seahawks better. But for all the things Schneider has done well, it's hard to top his track record when it comes to making midseason trade acquisitions.

And on Tuesday, Schneider made another big in-season addition, sending a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder to the Colts for All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson, a player who has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first eight seasons in the league while also being named first-team All-Pro three times and second-team All-Pro three times.

It will, of course, take time to see just how well that move works out for the Seahawks, but with Schneider and company making another significant in-season trade, let's take a look back at some of the other midseason trade acquisitions the Seahawks have made during Schneider's tenure as general manager.

2010: Seahawks acquire running back Marshawn Lynch from the Bills for a 2011 fourth-round pick and a 2012 fifth-round pick.

Midway through Schneider and Pete Carroll's first year, the Seahawks were looking to add help to their run game and their offense. What they didn't know is that they were also adding a tone-setter who would become a franchise icon and a key piece of the first Super Bowl-winning team in franchise history. Lynch capped his first season in Seattle with the "Beast Quake" touchdown run that will go down as one of the best runs in league history, then over the next four seasons he was a four-time Pro-Bowler and two-time All-Pro while rushing for at least 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns every year from 2011-2014.

In addition to adding a franchise-altering player with the Lynch trade, the Seahawks also traded receiver Deion Branch to the Patriots for the 2011 fifth-round pick they used on K.J. Wright, who went on to become one of the best linebackers in franchise history.

2017: Seahawks acquire left tackle Duane Brown and 2018 fifth-round pick for 2018 third-round pick and 2019 second-round pick.

Brown was already in his 10th season when the Seahawks acquired him in 2017, but over the next five seasons he showed he had plenty left in the tank, stabilizing one of the sport's most important positions following a lack of consistency there after Russell Okung left in free agency the previous season. Brown missed only five games in his four full seasons with the Seahawks, was selected to two Pro Bowls and played on three playoff teams, including the 2020 team that went 12-4 and won the NFC West.

2019: Seahawks acquire Quandre Diggs and a 2021 seventh-round pick for a 2020 fifth-round pick.

Diggs was already a very good defensive back by the time the Seahawks acquired him in a trade with the Lions, but he took his game to an even higher level in Seattle. After a strong finish to the 2019 season, Diggs earned Pro-Bowl honors in each of his first three full seasons with the Seahawks, recording 14 interceptions, 24 passes defensed and 229 tackles from 2020-2022. Diggs left in free agency in 2024, then returned to the team last year, spending most of the season on the practice squad while providing a valuable veteran presence in the secondary.

The Seahawks not only got a great player in Diggs, but incredible value, adding him, plus an additional pick, for only a fifth-rounder.

2020: Seahawks acquire defensive end Carlos Dunlap for center B.J. Finney and 2021 seventh rounder.

Dunlap, of course, will best be known for his long, successful career with the Bengals, which included a pair of Pro Bowl selections and 82.5 sacks in 11 seasons, but he also made solid contributions in his year and a half with the seasons, recording 13.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits in 25 games.

Dunlap said when he arrived in Seattle that his remaining goals were to get to 100 career sacks and win a Super Bowl, and he was able to check off those two boxes, in 2022 with Kansas City.

2023: Seahawks acquired defensive tackle Leonard Williams for 2024 second-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick.

Schneider and Carroll both pointed out over the years how valuable and rare dominant interior linemen are in the NFL, and with the 2023 deadline approaching, the Seahawks made a big swing to acquire Williams, who has become exactly the type of game-wrecker the Seahawks have long coveted at that position.

Williams, a former first-round pick of the Jets in 2015, joined the Seahawks after five seasons with the Giants, and has played the best football of his career after turning 30. In his first full season with the Seahawks, Williams had 11 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits on his way to Pro-Bowl honors, then he backed that up by earning second-team All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors in 2025 while helping lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title. Not only is Williams one of the best players on a loaded defense, he is also one of the leaders of the Dark Side defense that emerged as the league's best in 2025. Williams signed a multi-year contract extension this offseason, giving him a chance to add to a legacy that will see him go down as one of the best defensive linemen to wear a Seahawks uniform.

2024: Seahawks acquire linebacker Ernest Jones IV for 2025 fifth-rounder and LB Jerome Baker.

The Seahawks defense was still trying to find its way midway through its first season under Mike Macdonald when the team decided to make a change at linebacker. Jones, a young standout for the Rams from 2021-2023, surprisingly was traded to Tennessee prior to the 2024 season, then with the Titans off to a slow start, they moved Jones again, with the Seahawks being the benefactor.

While Jones wasn't the only reason for Seattle's defensive improvement, there is no arguing that he made a big difference as the Seahawks turned things around midway through the year. Jones has not only been a playmaker, leading the team last year in both tackles (126) and interceptions (5), he has also become the heartbeat of Macdonald's defense, an outspoken, emotional leader that the entire team, not just the defense, rallies behind. Among his many important leadership moments, Jones famously defended quarterback Sam Darnold after he threw four interceptions in a Week 11 loss to the Rams last season, slipping a few profanities in for emphasis. That game, as well as Jones’ emphatic defense of his quarterback, became a turning point for the Seahawks, who went on to win 10 straight games to close out the season, including Super Bowl LX.

2025: Seahawks acquire receiver and return specialists Rashid Shaheed for 2026 fourth and fifth-round picks.

Five games into his Seahawks career, Shaheed had yet to make much of a splash with his new team. And midway through that Week 14 game in Atlanta, the Seahawks were stuck in a low-scoring 6-6 tie at Atlanta. Then Shaheed took the second-half kickoff back 100 yard for a touchdown, kicking off a dominant second half that gave the Seahawks a 37-9 win. Two weeks later, the Seahawks found themselves down 16 points to the Rams and in desperate need of a spark when Shaheed returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown, sparking a rally that ended with the Seahawks winning in overtime, a critical win on their way to an NFC West title and the conference's top seed.

In the playoffs, Shaheed took the opening kickoff of Seattle's divisional round game against the 49ers back for a touchdown, setting the tone in a 41-6 blowout win. A week later in the NFC Championship Game, Shaheed hauled in a 51-yard pass on a deep ball from Sam Darnold on Seattle's third offensive play, not only setting up a Kenneth Walker III touchdown run but also providing an early spark in what was a great game for Darnold and the passing game.

While Shaheed is still evolving in the Seahawks' offense, he has shown time and time again in less than a calendar year with the team that he is a game-changing player, one who can swing momentum at any moment with his big-big play ability both as a returner and a receiver.

2026: Seahawks acquire guard Quenton Nelson for 2027 third-round pick and 2028 fifth-rounder.

Obviously, we don't know yet how this trade will play out, but it's hard not to look at what the Seahawks gave up—a third-rounder next year and a fifth in 2028—to acquire a likely Hall of Fame guard and not be excited for what this move could mean for the offense. Nelson, a three-time first-team All-Pro and three-time second-team All-Pro, has been a Pro-Bowls selection in each of his first eight seasons in the league, making him one of two offensive linemen, along with Hall of Fame tackle Joe Thomas, to earn Pro-Bowl honors in each of his first eight seasons.

Nelson, 30, has not only been one of the league's best offensive linemen throughout his career, he has also been very durable, missing four games with an ankle injury in 2021, but otherwise starting every game since he came into the league as a first-round pick in 2018.
