The Seahawks signed right tackle Abraham Lucas to a three-year contract extension on Thursday, locking up one of their top offensive linemen who is also a tone-setter for the offense.

"I'm still trying to process everything," Lucas said prior to Thursday's practice. "I'm ecstatic about it. It's been a journey and I'm so thankful to be here."

For a player who grew up in Everett before attending Archbishop Murphy High School and Washington State University, continuing his career for his hometown team is a dream scenario.

"First I want to thank the organization for their belief and their faith in me and Coach (Mike) Macdonald and Coach (John) Benton and Jody (Allen) and John (Schneider) and Joey Laine for putting something together for me," Lucas said. "It's a reflection of how much they believe in me and I love this team, I love this organization. This is my dream come true, the dream that I had since the time I was three years old, four years old, watching football with my dad and I'm so stoked about it. It means everything to me. I'm going to keep being the same guy, keep putting my head down and working and same stone faced, no emotion type of guy. I'm excited about it. I'm happy that something was able to get done."

Lucas is the first player in a standout 2022 draft class to sign an extension, a group that also includes several starters on both sides of the ball like left tackle Charles Cross, outside linebacker Boye Mafe, running back Kenneth Walker III, safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Riq Woolen.

Lucas, a third-round pick in that 2022 draft, won the starting job at right tackle as a rookie and started 16 games, giving the Seahawks solid, young bookends to their offensive line along with Cross, a first-round pick that year.

Injuries limited Lucas to six games in 2023, however, then after having offseason knee surgery, he missed the first half of last season, coming back to start the final seven games of the year despite being, by his own admission, far from 100 percent back.

This year, Lucas has enjoyed a healthy offseason for the first time since his rookie year and has not missed a practice, a great sign for his health and for Seattle's line. And this contract extension shows the faith the Seahawks have in Lucas moving forward.

"I'm so thankful for the organization for having faith in me," Lucas said. "This deal is a testament to how much they believe in me. Injuries suck and they're tough to get through, but you put your head down and keep going. I did that as best I could.

"You can control what you can control. Mike Leach taught me that. I try not to think about it in that regard. It's like, 'OK, I'm hurt, but now the rehab is my opportunity. Okay, now getting back is my opportunity. OK I've only played six games this year. That's my opportunity, seven games next year. That's my opportunity.' We keep going and keep a positive outlook towards it all as much as I can."

As a mauler in the run game and a strong pass protector, Lucas has become a tone-setter for the offense, helping lead a young offensive line that in addition to him and Cross features a rookie left guard in Grey Zabel, a second-year center in Jalen Sundell and a third-year right guard in Anthony Bradford.

"Just the attitude, the effort, the relentless pursuit of becoming a great player, if we all have that attitude, we're going to be in a good spot," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. "… We saw it his rookie year, the guy's a finisher. Talk about finishing plays in a dominant position. He's one of those guys, so that's what we expect from Abe. He knows that's his superpower, so he's one of those guys who we'll be following. It'll be fun to show reps when he finishes plays the way we want to, I think that's contagious throughout. Not only your offense, but your whole team."
