In Seattle's Super Bowl LX win on February 8, the defense had a dominant game. That unit finished the game with 6.0 sacks, two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, eight tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hits. Those stats, though, don't quiet paint the picture of the duress they were able to put on the Patriots offense. New England went scoreless through three entire quarters and only gained 78 yards and five first downs in those 45 minutes of the game.
What the Seahawks were able to do was nothing new or surprising, seeing as it was reflective of the season they had where they were ranked as the NFL's No. 1 scoring defense for the first time since 2015. Their defense in the 2025 season ranked them as the No. 1 DVOA defense. This defense ranks No. 8, all time in DVOA defense going as far back as 1978, which is how far DVOA stats go back.
"This is going to go down as one of the best defenses in football history," Uchenna Nwosu said. "So I'm grateful to be a part of something like that."
So, the Seahawks defense wasn't just good compared to past seasons, they're historically one of the best defenses the NFL has seen. And when it mattered, they showed up and put on a show for the nearly 126 million people who tuned in watched the biggest game of the season. More impressively, is that the Seahawks had been performing like that all season.
From Week 12 through Week 18, Seattle led the NFL in points allowed (99, 14.1 points per game) and through the post season allowed just 46 points, 15.3 per game after playing in the divisional round, NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. Only one team had a better points allowed per game through the playoff, which were the Patriots who played in four playoff games, and allowed 55 points through the postseason, or 13.8 points per game.
The Patriots were able to score 13 points on the defense, and the players weren't too happy about it, but they still recognized what they accomplished.
"We were a little upset that they scored at all in the Super Bowl, to be honest," Leonard Williams said. "We were trying to make history and have the first goose egg in Super Bowl. We took them to the fourth quarter. It was still a great feat, just the type of season we had as a defense, the type of season we had a team, and I think we capped it off the right way."
During their 10-game win streak to end their season, Seattle held the San Francisco 49ers out of the endzone in back-to-back games, an offense that averaged 25.7 points per game (No. 10 in the NFL) and held the Minnesota Vikings scoreless.
Julian Love said it was, " fitting" that the Seahawks performed the way they did in the Super Bowl.
"We've shown so many moments of greatness," Love said. "So many guys contributed to this thing defensively. To finish this way, on our terms—the one thing that was being talked about in a positive light about this team in the offseason was our defense, there was a lot of expectation there. And to say we met them or even exceeded them, it's pretty crazy. It took a lot of people."
The Seahawks knew what they wanted to accomplish couldn't be done alone. "No egos" is a core value the Seahawks stand on. The players know it. The coaches know it. And the leadership knows it. Throughout the game it was evident the defense was selfless and playing with no egos.
"The people in this room are very selfless," Love said. "The egos are to the side, and that's been our success this year."
Although one MVP is crowned at the end of the game, which was Kenneth Walker III, there were multiple players who could have been considered as defensive MVP. Derick Hall had 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. Devon Witherspoon had 1.0 sack, four quarterback pressures and helped cause a Nwosu pick-six. Ernest Jones IV led the team with 11 tackles and had a tackle for loss. Byron Murphy II had 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery. The defense played like they had all season, for each other.
"I think when you get around a group of guys that you truly want to see succeed, you take your own personal ambitions out of it," Jones said. "There's so much that a team can do. And I think that's what a lot of guys did, put themselves to the side, and I mean, I think you die for a greater cause. When winning the Super Bowl, great things are going to happen to guys who need contracts, guys that are coming up on contracts, whatever the case may be. I mean, winning helps. So I think we just believed in the mission."
The mission is complete, but the players are already thinking ahead to next season. Being able to be one of the best defenses in NFL history will be very difficult to recreate, but they will try, even if they have to keep what they need to work on close to their chest.
"There's a lot of improvement," Jones said. "I don't want to put it out there, because they already want to figure out the sauce anyway. We'll improve and do great things, but I will say, man, to be the middle linebacker and part of a defense where they're debating where we fit at (historically), that's a dream for defenders. I'm blessed to be part of that Dark Side defense that caused a lot of problems this year."
Love added, "This team, it won't be able to be done again. You guys have seen it, we've talked about it ad nauseam, this team was so close, it was really cool, and thankfully, now it's stamped in history. Every five, 10 years, we'll be able to link back up, so thankfully we have that. Next year, it's going to be hard to replicate, but the great part about it is that the core of that is the youth on this team, and for the most part that's going to be back next year. The coaching staff, for the most part, is intact, the core pieces will continue that. And it's not something you talk about, it's something you just live."
