Seattle's Offense Was The Star Of Friday's Preseason Win

Seattle’s offense shined in their preseason win against the Chiefs on Friday and showed “what’s to come the rest of the season.”

On Friday night, the Seahawks rushed for 268 yards. The last time Seattle rushed for more than 250 yards was in 2022 in a regular season game against the Detroit Lions. Yes, this was just a preseason game, but it's an indicator that Klint Kubiak and his offense can walk the walk, just as much as they can talk the talk. And proof that "We want to run the ball," are not empty words.

"The run game being successful is just what we've been working on the whole offseason," right guard Anthony Bradford said. "As an O-line we're stressing running the ball right now. So you seen that tonight. It's going to keep going like that."

Seattle's starting offense, along with its offensive line that consisted of Josh Jones, Grey Zabel, Jalen Sundell, Anthony Bradford and Abe Lucas, started Friday's 33-16 win over the Chiefs with an 81-yard opening drive touchdown.

"We're just plugging away," coach Mike Macdonald said on the offensive line. "Our offensive line coaches are doing a heck of a job. John Benton, Rico (Rick Dennison), JO (Justin Outten), Quinshon (Odom). It's really clear what we're asking them to do. They're determined and playing really hard and practicing really hard. A lot of great stuff. A lot of great stuff. But I just told the team, hey, this is what we're capable of to a certain extent. These are things that you get a feel for what we can do. There is a lot of stuff we can improve on and it's also the second week of preseason. Like it's great, but it's a building block for us moving into the season, and we want to be playing our best football throughout the season but keep getting better all the way from here on out."

While the offensive starters only played the first series, it gave players like George Holani and Damien Martinez and chance to show off what they could do. Holani finished the night with five carries for 49 yards and Martinez had 50 yards on 11 carries and scored his first NFL touchdown.

"It was crazy, being in there with the guys, them celebrating, probably more than me, but it was cool," Martinez said. "It was just a good feeling, getting back in the end zone and be out there with the guys."

Along with Holani and Martinez, Jacardia Wright, the rookie out of Missouri State and Zach Charbonnet also had solid days.

"It was great to see the running backs eats today," Holani said. "Getting Dame in there, his first touchdown. That was pretty cool to see. Zach finally got to get in there, get his feet wet, but that's things we see every day for the running backs. Jacardia Wright, he had a crazy run where, I thought he was down, but he was still up. I was like, 'Dang. He got like 15 yards out of that.' Just getting that second effort, just really showing up.

Adding that it was a joint effort for the backs to have as successful as a day as they had, Holani said, "All around it was good from the receivers blocking, tight ends blocking and the o line blocking."

In Friday's game as a whole, Seattle's offense put up 477 total yards and had 29 first down.

"I think just right now our offensive operation I'm very pleased with," Macdonald said. "How we take the ball, the decisiveness in how we move and shift. Felt like we called our targets right. Just felt like we were going to the right guys for the most part really until about the fourth quarter. Backs ran really hard. Every back today I thought ran the ball hard and going forward how we finish plays, can't wait to watch it."

While the running backs were the talk of Friday's game, the success of the run game allowed for others on the offense to have big plays too.

"If we can run the ball like we did tonight, obviously it's preseason but that's something that we want to do," said Jake Bobo, who had two touchdowns. "To be able to do it here, do it against guys in different colored jerseys. It was good and if we can do that it's going to open a whole other dimension for this offense. It's something we want to do. It was good to get it done tonight, but we've got a lot of work to do to get to where we want to go, especially in the run game aspect of things, because it will open up a whole other bunch of things we can do on offense."

The success of the offense and the run game is something the players expected.

Brady Russell said, "I just saw a lot of physicality and just saw the traits that we've been talking about over and over and training over and over in camp, translate over the game. So really, it didn't surprise me because I know we have a lot of dogs up front and dogs towing the rock behind us. So I know when they get their pads down, that's what it's going to look like every time."

Part of that, according to Macdonald is the clarity the whole offense has.

"I think it's a driving force behind what we're doing," he said. "There is no gray. There is no changing things. There is no maybes. There is no kindas, sortas. These are the rules; this is how we identify it. These are your targets; this is your footwork. Let's rock and roll. If I was a player that's the way I would want it so I could go do my job, so that's the expectation."

For Bradford, he can feel the difference.

"We've been working together all off season and it's just a different type of vibe in the room. We all love it. I'm seeing a lot of great strides that I haven't been seeing in myself the previous two years, so I'm excited to see where it keeps going from right now."

"I think everybody just dominated tonight," Martinez added. "We talk about it all the time playing a style that nobody wants to play. So I think we just really showed that tonight… Just showing what's to come the rest of the season."
