Devon Witherspoon Extension Something Seahawks 'Should Celebrate'

On Saturday morning, the Seahawks and cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed on a contract extension, and by Saturday night, the three-time Pro-Bowl cornerback was celebrating his teammates' big plays like it was the playoffs, not an August preseason game.

Witherspoon, like the rest of Seattle's starters, didn't play in the team's 17-7 loss to the Cowboys, but he once again demonstrated a lot of the traits that make him such a foundational piece of the team.

"Spoon is all the things—he's a great person, he's a great football player, he's a great teammate, he's a great leader," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the game. "Those are the guys we want to be here. It's similar to Jax (Jaxon Smith-Njigba), these are foundational people to our team, and I'm extremely excited to get that foundation laid where we know Spoon is going to be here for the long haul. And we're also excited for the opportunity to reward him. This is a contract that we feel like he's earned, and we should celebrate it as well. It's also really exciting to know that we have foundational players that are going to be part of our team for a long time.

While waiting for his deal to get done, Witherspoon didn't miss anything during the voluntary offseason program, nor did he sit out any of training camp or dial back his full-throttle style of play.

"He's just infectious, and he loves the game," Macdonald said. "We were talking today, and people would talk to him and ask him why he's doing what he's doing, and he's like, 'I love the game of football, and there's a season to get ready for.' He keeps the main thing the main thing without getting distracted by all the extra stuff. He's also a great teammate, he wants to be there for the guys, and how our team plays is important to him, which is really cool.

Witherspoon briefly discussed agreeing to a new contract in an interview with Seahawks Legend Cliff Avril during the KING 5 broadcast, saying, "It feels good. It was a long time coming, but we got it done though, all glory to God. Shout out to John (Schneider) and the people upstairs for making this happen. I'm just grateful man.

After making three Pro Bowls in three seasons, winning a Super Bowl and now earning a lucrative new extension, Witherspoon was asked by Avril what is next, and responded, "Just continuing to do it over and over again. Consistency. Can you be consistent in what you do? That's what defines greatness to me, and that's what I'm chasing."

Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider also talked about Witherspoon's new deal during his pregame interview with Steve Raible on the Seahawks pregame radio show.

"It's a win-win," Schneider said. "It's a great deal for Spoon, it's a great deal for the organization. He'll be with us for the next six years now. He's such a great guy, such a high-end competitor. Obviously, the instincts, the anticipation, but just the juice he brings and the way he treats everybody in the building, he's just a special, special person. I give (VP of football administration) Joey Laine a ton of credit, this took forever, Joey had a lot of patience with this. We worked through it, and finally got it done first thing this morning."
