Montorie Foster Jr.'s 'Great Summer' Continues With Strong Showing In Seahawks' Preseason Opener

Receiver Montorie Foster Jr. was Seattle’s leading receiver and had a touchdown in the Seahawks’ preseason loss to the Cowboys.

Montorie Foster Jr.'s rookie year started with the Seahawks, with the Michigan State receiver signing with Seattle as an undrafted rookie out of Michigan State, but an injury early in training camp led to him being waived, meaning he didn't make it to preseason games.

A little over a year later, Foster was a standout in his preseason debut, leading the Seahawks with 36 receiving yards on five catches, including a 5-yard touchdown that was his team's only score in a 17-7 loss to the Cowboys.

And Foster's solid outing could have been a spectacular one if not for a slightly overthrown deep ball after he got wide open, a play that could have been a 68-yard score with a better throw.

"He should have made two (touchdowns) today if I don't overthrow him on that ball on the left sideline," said quarterback Drew Lock, who found Foster in the back of the end zone in a tight window for the opening score. "He's had a great summer. He's had a great summer.

As Lock notes, it isn't just that Foster had a strong performance in Saturday's game, it's that he has been a standout nearly every day in camp. It's quite a change for Foster, who missed most of camp last year, then spent most of the regular season back home in Ohio before joining the Seahawks' practice squad late in the regular season, allowing him to be a part of the team's Super Bowl run.

"The journey he's been on from the previous year until now, man, he's light-years away from where he was, and he's been fantastic for us," Lock said. "He makes great plays. Explosive with the ball in his hand. Reliable. He's going to catch the ball. Nothing but confidence for him."

Foster has high expectations for himself, so he hasn't been surprised by his strong start to camp, but he also appreciates it after his journey last season.

"It's been great," he said. "Every time I play, I play to a standard and it don't matter if I'm playing good or bad, my standard is my standard. I go out there every day and just try to put my best foot forward every day and put forth the effort, go block, do the little things and let everything else take care of itself."

Foster added that having this opportunity, "means everything," after missing most of last season. "I was back at home for 16 weeks and it was tough. There were times where I wanted to give up and get a regular job. But, I stayed at it. My dad told me that cream always rises to the top and to just stay faithful. I just kept working, and now I'm here today."

So what did getting a regular job look like to Foster? For starters, he was substitute teaching at his high school, St. Edwards in Lakewood, Ohio, and he also got his real estate license to give him a career path if football hadn't been an option.

"I was doing a lot of things, man," Foster said with a big grin. "I was teaching, substitute teaching at my high school; I actually got my real estate license too, while I was back at home. Then I was training little kids in football too, as well, just to get back to the game."

Foster kept working out hoping for an opportunity last fall, but he wasn't sure if it would come.

"I knew I had some teams in the past, before the pre-draft process, call me and stuff," he said. "But you never know in this business because it's the one percent of the one percent. It's all about faith and timing and luckily, I was on God's time."

Asked about his brief teaching career at St. Edwards, Foster said, "I was just a substitute teacher. Just filling in, really. I had, I want to say, freshmen and juniors in high school, so that's what I was doing with.

"I had a Latin class. I don't know any Latin, at all, so I was like, man do y'all's homework and I will just be here watching you all, and it was all good from there. No lesson plan, not at all."

Foster may not have been the most prepared Latin substitute, but the way he has been playing this summer, he probably won't be looking for a job outside of football anytime soon.
