MIKE MACDONALD: First of all, I want to shout out the 12s. That's the most people I've ever seen at a preseason game. We owe them a better performance, to say the least.

I told the team we were going to learn a lot from this game, take the result out of it. Obviously it's disappointing to lose the game. Any time you line up in anything competitively, we're trying to win, but right now our process needs to improve. That's really the biggest take-away really in both phases, on offense and defense. Our operation is not up to par, and how we're finishing plays is not up to par. That will be a focus moving forward, but it's good to know. You know, I'm glad we know now on the things we need to be able to do to take our team to the next level. We have a great opportunity to go figure it out. We have a big week coming up. A couple of great practices, opportunities. Then off to Tennessee we go. Have a great practice and play another great game and move forward. That's where we're at.

Q. You say the operation wasn't up to your standard. What do you mean?

MIKE MACDONALD: Just all the things. You know, how we get calls in, how we take the line, how we motion, how we shift, how we get lined up on defense, how we communicate. All those things need to take a very big jump very quickly, but it's good to know. Now we know it, so let's go get it.

Q. I want to ask you about Spoon's contract. Obviously we all know he's a great player. Why is he so important to what you have done and what you want to do in the future?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, I mean, Spoon is all the things. He's a great person. He's a great football player. He's a great teammate. He's a great leader. Those are the guys we want to be here. It's kind of similar to Jax. These are foundational people to our team, and I'm extremely excited to get that foundation laid where we know Spoon is going to be here for the long haul. We're also excited for the opportunity to reward him. You know, this is a contract that we feel like he's earned, and we should celebrate it as well, but it's also really exciting to know that we have foundational players that are going to be part of our team here for a long time.

Q. He was one of the guys when you said the first phase of OTAs some of the veteran guys didn't need to be there. He's there day one. He's out practicing like a maniac while he's still waiting to get a deal done. What does that tell you about him?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, that paints a great picture. He's just infectious, and he loves the game. We were talking today, but people would talk to him and ask him why he's doing what he's doing. He's, like, hey, I love the game of football, and there's a season to get ready for. He kind of keeps the main thing the main thing without getting distracted by all the extra stuff. He is also a great teammate. He just wants to be there for the guys, and how our team plays is important to him, which is really cool.

Q. He closes out the NFC Championship game with those two pass break-ups, and then the slot blitzes were just insane in the Super Bowl. Certain players just have a knack for coming up with the biggest moments. What is it about him that allows him to do that?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, I think it's his relentless attitude about the details. Doesn't matter the situation, he's playing it at top speed, top intent. That's how we want our football team to operate. There are plays earlier in the game in the NFC game that Spoon probably could have played better, but the mentality to just attack the next play all the time is probably what makes it so special. Then in both those plays they were both extended plays where I think we were in man coverage on both of them. To be able to guard your man for that amount of time relentlessly is legendary type stuff. Then in terms of how he plays nickel position on early downs and the things he did in the Super Bowl are some of the things that make him special as well.

Q. I think you may have had a comment on the radio after the Super Bowl about the impact he had on the Super Bowl as a blitzer. Does that make you feel like maybe you should use him more in that role?

MIKE MACDONALD: Yes, yes (laughing). He's a great corner. He's a great nickel. When Nick (Emmanwori) is available, Nick is also a great nickel. You know, it's a great problem to have as a coach. How do you deploy your people to have success? All those instincts about timing and even beating guards, setting them up and beating backs in one-on-one pass rush situations, it's not common for that skill set.

Q. It looked like he jumped about 8 feet in the air to celebrate after the long punt today.

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah. We were trying to get a penalty. We were trying to get a celebration penalty, but I was a little disappointed. We could bring some more energy to the celebrations.

Q. Ernest Jones was out celebrating. A lot of guys that were playing seemed very into the game. Does that tell you something about those guys?

MIKE MACDONALD: I was excited. The guys playing, we have to play with more urgency. Take from when the ball was snapped to when the play is over, but how we finish the play to the whole operation needs to improve, and the players are responsible for that as well. It isn't like a comment on our coaches or anything. It's the whole team. To do that, that provides energy. That's how you stack plays. That's how you kind of get out of a rut is by falling back on those core fundamentals, those core principles of how we're going to operate as a football team. That didn't happen today. That's probably the most disappointing thing.

Q. Would you really want the penalty?

MIKE MACDONALD: Kind of, yeah.

Q. Why?

MIKE MACDONALD: I just wanted the guys to feel the energy, kind of like we did last year. I think we got an interception or something. I think everybody was in uniform. Maybe, I don't know. I should probably look at the rules better.

Q. Tyrice, you said earlier in camp that you'd like to find a way to get him involved a little bit more. It seemed like he had one of those games that shows he's a --

MIKE MACDONALD: We're a little banged up at inside backer, so T-Knight probably played more than we bargained for, but he was the best player on the field on defense today, for sure, so that was cool to see.

Q. What is your initial thought on how the two quarterbacks played?

MIKE MACDONALD: Good enough to put up seven points. Got to put up more points. We need to operate better. There's some good things. It's great to have tape against another team now. In a different type of setting where the pass rush is live, you're up against the play clock. All these different things that you have to be able to play out are great learning experiences for everybody, quarterbacks included.

Q. Jalen talked to us a couple of days about being more decisive is his key. How do you think he was tonight? He seemed to hold to the ball.

MIKE MACDONALD: There were spots. We have to see what the things that he was seeing, but I think the whole thing, just let's go take another step, you know? Was it there? Let's encourage them to go rip it. I think some great things that Jalen did was extend plays with his legs, something that has been a point of emphasis with him. It was great to see him do that today. That really helped us.

Q. Montorie Foster has had a strong camp. It's good to see when a player can do that and carry --

MIKE MACDONALD: Happy for Montorie. All the things he felt in camp, he felt today during the game.

Q. We haven't seen Jalen take off and run a lot this summer in practices. Are you saying that's something you want to encourage him to do more?

MIKE MACDONALD: The play doesn't have to end if there's nobody to throw with your progressions. You're allowed to extend the play. It's up to you on how long the play goes.

Q. You had Aden Durde doing the play calling tonight?

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah, AD called the game. Did a good job.

Q. What did that afford you? What did you see differently, or what were you able to glean?

MIKE MACDONALD: I think it was best for us right now for him to call it. It's a great experience for AD. He's called the majority of camp up to this point. He's done a phenomenal job throughout camp. He really has. We've had a ton of call periods. He's on the details, just doing a lot of great stuff, honestly. But at some point I got to get ready to call a game too, so I think I'll probably call next week.

Q. Bud Clark, did you get a chance with Durde calling plays to see him running --

MIKE MACDONALD: He did some good things. He did some good things. Some things off the top of my head that I know that we want to talk about and improve, but again, he's a great example of, hey, this was your first experience playing a game in a loud environment where we have to communicate. The communication needs to improve. I think that's a wake-up call to our guys of examples of, shout-out to the 12s, of being loud and showing our guys that we have to be able to communicate better. Great first experience for him. He's going to learn from it.

QB Drew Lock

Q. Drew, what did you like about the opening drive?

DREW LOCK: Yeah, finishing in the red zone was probably the plus there. Good to put together a good set of plays. Moved the ball well. Ran the ball well. When guys got the ball in their hands, they made plays with it.

Montorie (Foster Jr.) had a great catch in the end zone, and we finished. I think that's the key take-away or what we need to work on is just finishing in the red zone.

Q. It looked like there was a lot of trust in that throw. He didn't turn around and see that ball until it was almost on him.

DREW LOCK: Yeah, when you are tight down there in the red zone, you know, there's not a lot of time for patting the ball and seeing guys come out of breaks. You know, we've obviously practiced that play before and built some good chemistry on it. I trust Montorie, and he made a great catch.

Q. It seems like he makes at least one play every day. What have you thought of the summer he's had?

DREW LOCK: He should have made two today if I don't overthrow him on that ball on the left sideline. He's had a great summer. He's had a great summer.

I think I said it -- I forgot who I was saying it to, but the journey he's been on from the previous year until now, man, he's light-years away from where he was, and he's been fantastic for us. He makes great plays. Explosive with the ball in his hand. Reliable. He's going to catch the ball.

Yeah, nothing but confidence for him.

Q. Mike was saying kind of the operation wasn't great at times today. Any reason you can feel for that at all or...

DREW LOCK: You know, working through some kinks early. You know, we expect perfection in the operation side. That's something that we preach, and that obviously wasn't there tonight. Something we need to continue to press through training camp. I think obviously the quarterback room can lead that, and we're going to.

Q. You've been hearing all the plays through your new offensive coordinator through camp, but anything different tonight? Anything different and new about that?

DREW LOCK: No, I thought it was great. We mixed in the wristband a little bit. No, it was actually seamless. First time really hearing him call wristband and flipping in and out from a wristband call and non-wristband call. I thought the communication was great.

It's been worked on over camp. To be able to mix in the wristband, mix in a real call for the first time tonight, live bullets, it was great.

Q. Did you use the wristband at all last season in the preseason?

DREW LOCK: I don't remember about preseason. I know we did in the regular season, just about every one of them on there. Sometimes they can get a little wordy. I know there's multiple different beliefs on wristbands, non-wristbands. Whatever makes it easiest I think is for the better.

Q. Is that usually the quarterback's or the coordinator's preference or a combination of the two?

DREW LOCK: I would say a combination of the two. I've been in multiple different systems, and some put the whole game plan on there. Some are just third down and red zone. We didn't use it for a couple of years when I was in Denver. I think it's just a preference thing.

Q. You said it was mostly on the wristband last year?

DREW LOCK: Yeah, mostly, if not all of them on the wristband. Actually, that's false. It was not all of them. It was mostly, now that I'm thinking about it more. It was not all of them.

We would do a meeting every night on a Saturday and go through all the ones that were non-wrist banded to call them out and keep practicing those.

Q. Mike opened his comments today talking about the crowd for a preseason game being big and loud. Did you sense a difference?

DREW LOCK: Yeah, it was awesome. It was awesome. Even when you finally get told the day is done, you kind of absorb a little more. Just looking around late in the third, early fourth, like, wow, this place is actually packed. It was super cool.

Again, nothing that we don't know be, but shout-out it the 12s. Best fan base ever. It's super cool that they came out and supported us tonight.

Q. What were your thoughts on the way that the quarterback rotation was today? Mike said it was a switch-up from the past where you might have played the whole first half and then Jalen comes in. How does that impact rhythm?

DREW LOCK: Yeah, it was definitely new. I had done a lot of different ways. This is my first time doing it this way. I feel like, honestly, it is a good way as a backup guy. Obviously me and Jalen aren't going to be the starters this year. Kind of being able to go to, get pulled out, sit a little bit kind of feels like a normal Sunday where you are just getting thrown in if something were to happen.

I kind of feel that way about how the rotation went tonight. It's a good thing to practice for us, I think.

Q. To get to this point where you are finally playing against somebody else. Next week you go on the road. What's that journey been like in camp as you take steps closer to being real, so to speak?

DREW LOCK: We've had a great camp. We've came to work every single day. Every room has, honestly. It's been really impressive to watch the guys work.

I know it's always exciting to go on your first road trip as a team. You got everybody. You've got however many players we have going on this trip and get to build a brotherhood a little bit and hang out and go to somebody else's place, feel that energy.

It feels different than being at home and going against each other all the time. Being able to go do a little practice with the Titans will be cool. Yeah, it's awesome to get on the road and feel like you're not wanted.

QB Jalen Milroe

(On how it felt to be back playing at Lumen Field) "It was good to be back on the field, especially at home to start the year off. Being around the guys and especially for us, going through training camp, competing against each other in training, it was our opportunity to go compete against somebody else. It's a lot of fun. It's good to feel the energy from our fans, especially just being in game one of the preseason. I'm excited for the season to keep on rolling as we get closer to our first game."

(On how decisive he was in today's game) "I think every play that I have the ball in my hands, it's all about being decisive. Trusting the game play and trusting Coach (Brian) Fleury with whatever play call he has and putting our offense in the best position to be successful. I think that was the key to the whole game. Of course, this is what the preseason is for. There are always things we can clean up, there's always things we could do positive, and even if we came out victorious, there's things that we can still improve on and get better at. That's the exciting part about the preseason and getting the opportunity to play today. The biggest thing is just to build on today and going onto our next opponent."

(On if his high scramble rate was part of the gameplan) "Not necessarily. Anytime, I have the ball in my hands, it's about putting our offense in the best position to win. Whether it's passing, running, handing the ball off, there's so many areas to our offense that can beat a defense. Every opportunity we have to move the chains we do it in unique ways and that was just one way to do it."

(On Brian Fleury's coaching during the game) "I think what's unique about having the play caller on the field is that you can get the direct dialogue as far as what he's seeing or plays that are going to set up during our drive. Of course we have the iPads, so we're able to see exactly what coverage, structure and then they set up plays. It's the communication of moving forward. Of course, you watch the tape of what exactly went down on that drive, so now it's the moving forward aspect of looking at how we can attack the defense."

(On how he felt about the speed of the game compared to last year) "Never pleased. There are so many opportunities to grow as a quarterback in this league. For all of us in the locker room, it's about, 'How can we be better than we were this weekend?' Today was a great opportunity for us to put it on display and the hard work we've been doing during the week. Of course, we all want to learn, grow and get better."

(On the role a quarterback can play in the red zone without pressing) "I think that's key. When you're in the red zone, we need to come out with points. Whether it's a field goal, whether it's a touchdown, coming out with points is so important, especially to help our defense out. Putting points on the board is so important. It's going to be critical when we play tough opponents. When we're trailing in a game or in the lead, it's really just about finishing drives. I think that's another emphasis for us.

(On what he has seen from Montorie Foster Jr.) "I think a growth mindset. A mindset to grow each and every day that he has the opportunity to be on the field. I think, also, the approach that he takes, whether it's preparing, whether it's playing a different position, to X to Z to F, being versatile so (Coach Fleury) can use him on the field. I think that's something that I applaud him on is that he's been versatile around the field and playing all positions."

(On if he has played in a game where the quarterbacks rotate the way they did in today's game) "I think as a backup, you have to be prepared and ready to go at any point. This is not my first time being a backup, so I think reps are so important for me and Drew (Lock), and for any guy that's a backup because in the league, the starter gets majority of the reps. As many reps that we can get, as much as possible, are going to prepare us and help us out for whenever the opportunity comes that we play in the game. I don't see it as a negative. I see it as an opportunity for us to get reps. Preseason is big for us because during the season, once you have an established starter, your reps are cut short."

(On if he has talked to Terrion Arnold) "Of course. That's my dog. I'm very happy that he is going to be a Seahawk. I think now it's just showing him the way of how we do things. I think that's now a 'move forward' process. The process was trying to figure out where he's going to go, so now he's a (Seahawk). We're just going to emphasize what we do being here in Seattle, and emphasizing our theme, our mottos, and our team missions and goals, so now it's a running forward mentality with having him  as part of our team."

(On what people should know about Terrion Arnold) "I think number one is that he's committed. When he has goals set for him, he wants to achieve them, and he's going to put his all into everything he puts into it. This is someone that really cares about his teammates. He's really unique, as far as what he can do on the field. He's going to really love the culture that we have here because it's similar to the vibe that we had when we were in college."

(On how Terrion Arnold is during this process) "Doing good. He's doing good, he's excited for the opportunity, and he is really going to seize it when he gets here."

WR Rashad Rochelle

(On how close he was to scoring a touchdown on his punt return) "I think I was pretty close. It was one of those things, I was super excited and kind of winded. When I was running, I was kind of like, dang. But I'm going to get it next time."

(On the sideline celebration afterwards) "It was electric. Those are things you dream of when you're a little kid watching preseason games. To come out here and have my opportunity and make the most of it. When I got tackled, to see guys like Devon Witherspoon and Cody White and Rashid Shaheed come and celebrate with me, that's amazing."

(On the emphasis on special teams during the preseason) "Special teams is one of those things, if anything, it's one of the most important because it can flip a field. It can change a lot of things in a game and change trajectories. Coach Harbaugh, Coach [Devin Fitzsimmons], they've told us, hey, we're going to have opportunities in a game, let's go make them. And I'm glad we did."

LB Tyrice Knight

(On the pass protection today against the Seattle defense) "We talked about it on the sideline and even at practice. We know they are a nickel pressure team. I've seen the safety off the hash, stacking that nickel so I knew the pressure was coming. It's a look that I've seen countless times and I definitely applied myself and had two good ones today."

(On how different this training camp was from last year by having the time to settle in with the offense) "It's a big difference this year. I'm able to be with the guys, be around the guys in camp, and build relationships with these guys. Going into the game, you know, these are my brothers. Last year, I was coming in not knowing guys' names and trying to figure out coaches' names. This year, it's just a big difference. I know everybody, we're family. I believe in them and they believe in me. I'm grateful that I was able to be here during camp and OTAs.

(On what was seen vision wise to find some space and hit gaps) "Just following my technique. Staying true to my technique and hitting the holes that we talked about in practice, showing those same looks that we had. That's just all there was, just being confident in my ability and just reading the holes."

LB Patrick O'Connell

(On getting back on the field) "It felt great, just to go against another team. Obviously, you've just been going against your own during camp. It's good to actually get some live action again."

(On how he's feeling) "Obviously just keep grinding every single day. There's going to be ups and downs every single day. That's just how this game is which is awesome and that's why I love it because it's a daily grind. I'm feeling really good though. I'm excited to keep going and excelling."

DE Rylie Mills

(On what he learned in this game) "I liked my pass rush and how I want to approach it against different guys. I think also in a live situation and how you want to stack rushes and play the run, I think it was great for me. I have a lot to learn from."

(On getting preseason opportunities when he didn't have them last year) "I always remind myself that no matter how bad anything gets, last year I was just standing on the sideline just counting the reps like everybody else. As long as it's not that, I'm doing great."

(On what he hopes to get out of a joint practice) "I would compare what we do against different teams and show what we've been working on all of camp. And to be able to do it against a different team instead of each other."

RB George Holani

(On running the ball a lot on the first drive) "It was big and we could've capitalized on some of those runs. They could've been way better. Especially on some of those runs, those wide zones. Just being able to take advantage of it and learning from the different defenses we face as well. Those defenses are a lot different from our defense. It's pretty cool to go out there and play somebody else."

(On what he can take away from playing a different defense) "Trust in the tracks with the routes that we're given. Especially going into Tennessee and being able to watch their film from the preseason and see how they play against the wide zone and different runs."

(On new Offensive Coordinator Brian Fleury and his play calling) "Honestly, for us as an offense, just trying to find that momentum and stay on it. I think we'd rather have more explosive plays, whether it's runs or passes. That just goes back to us as a position group trying to figure out what we can work on to make more explosive plays."

WR Montorie Foster Jr.

(On whether he knew the ball would be right on him for the touchdown pass) "Yeah, I did actually. It was kind of tight coverage a little bit, and it was a tight window, too, shout out to Drew (Lock). On that plant, I knew the ball was going to be right there, so I was just ready for it"

(On whether the linebacker got a tip on the touchdown pass) "He almost tipped it, it was super close, but I was just ready for the moment and then made the play, so definitely."

(On having a good camp, and having it carry over to the game) "Definitely man, it's been great. Every time I play, I play to a standard and it don't matter if I'm playing good or bad, my standard is my standard. I go out there every day and just try to put my best foot forward every day and put forth the effort, go block, do the little things and let everything else take care of itself."

(On how close he was to a second touchdown) "I was close, man, I feel like watching the tape on the sideline, I could have done a better part of just digging out my route. I looked a little bit too early. That's something I can clean up in my game, which I will do next game."

(On the importance of the next couple of weeks) "Definitely, man. Every time I go out on that field whatever is on my plate, I am just going to take care of whatever I got to do. I can't wait to so get more opportunities on special teams to show that I can do that too, as well."

(On being able to contribute a little bit after missing last year) "It means everything. I was back at home for 16 weeks and it was tough. There were times where I wanted to give up and get a regular job. But, I stayed at it. My dad told me that cream always rises to the top and to just stay faithful. I just kept working, and now I'm here today."

(On his teaching) "I was doing a lot of things, man. I was teaching, substitute teaching at my high school; I actually got my real estate license too, while I was back at home. Then I was training little kids in football too, as well, just to get back to the game."

(On whether he wondered if he would get another opportunity after getting injured last year) "I had no idea, man. I knew I had some teams in the past, before the pre-draft process, call me and stuff. But you never know in this business because it's the one percent of the one percent. It's all about faith and timing and luckily I was on God's time."

(On when he was teaching) "It was when I went back home. So, I would say, probably, in like September. September of last year."

(On what he was teaching) "I was just a substitute teacher. Just filling in, really. I had, I want to say, freshmen and juniors in high school, so that's what I was doing with."

(On which subjects he was teaching) "I had a Latin class. I don't know any Latin, at all, so I was like, man do y'all's homework and I will just be here watching you all, and it was all good from there. No lesson plan, not at all."

CB Shemar Jean-Charles

(On his biggest takeaway from this game) "It's not the result as a collective that we want, but there's a lot we can learn from this. It's a preseason game so a lot of guys are getting opportunities that they might not see later on in the year. This is the perfect time to take everything and watch the film and learn from it."

(On what he could have done better on the touchdown pass he was defending) "Not let him catch it. At the end of the day, he had a great play and that's the life of a cornerback sometimes. Sometimes you can have perfect positioning and it doesn't go your way. You have to always have a 'next play' mentality."

(On the value of getting to tackle an opponent after not tackling in training camp) "It feels good to go out there and let it loose. I feel like a lot of us had fun while touching the grass. It did feel good to hit somebody outside of our own teammates."

(On the Devon Witherspoon extension) "We are all happy and it's a blessing to see Spoon (Devon Witherspoon) get exactly what he deserves. He's a great player, great teammate, and that added on to the hype going into today."
