Looking to add depth at quarterback while Sam Darnold is sidelined by injury, the Seahawks signed Adrian Martinez to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Martinez was one of two players signed to the practice squad along with linebacker Jamie Sheriff. Linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and receiver Malick Meiga were released to make room on the practice squad.

Martinez gives the Seahawks depth behind Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe with Darnold ruled out for Sunday’s game against Arizona due to a quad injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Bears. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said Darnold would not go on injured reserve and described him as week to week with the injury.

Martinez, who went undrafted out of Kansas State in 2023, began his professional career with the Lions before being waived prior to the start of the regular season. He then signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League and went on to earn league MVP honors as well as UFL championship game MVP honors.

Following his success in the UFL, Martinez has spent time with the Jets and 49ers over the past three seasons, appearing in one game with the 49ers last season. Martinez' time with the 49ers should help him quickly learn Seattle's offense given the similarities in the systems, with Seattle's previous offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, and current one, Brian Fleury, both having worked for San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan.

Martinez' college career, which included four seasons at Nebraska and one at Kansas State, saw him start 47 career games, completing 63.6 percent of his pass attempts for 9,752 yards, 51 touchdowns and 31 interceptions while rushing for 2,928 yards and 45 touchdowns.

Sheriff, who initially joined the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie in 2024, spent training camp and the preseason with the Seahawks this year, then signed to the Rams' practice squad after being waived as part of the cutdown to 53 players before the start of the season. Sheriff has appeared in three games over the past two seasons, two with Seattle in 2024 and 2025, and one with Carolina in 2024.
