The Seahawks will be without quarterback Sam Darnold for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, head coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday.

Darnold injured his quad late in Monday night's game against the Bears, and while the injury will not cause him to go on injured reserve, he will not play this week, with Drew Lock, who has been dealing with an elbow injury, expected to start in his place.

"Sam injured his quad at the end of the game, so Sam's going to be out this week," Macdonald said. "It'll be week-to-week for Sam, he's not going to go on IR. The plan is for Drew to start, Jalen (Milroe) will be ready to back up. Drew's still working back from his elbow, so we'll work through that process this week, so we'll be getting both guys ready to play. We've got full confidence in those guys, and we have a plan in place and we'll go execute."

While it is the quad injury that will keep Darnold out, Macdonald revealed that his quarterback also suffered a fractured rib when he took a hard hit from cornerback Kyler Gordon on a blitz on Seattle's second offensive play.

"In terms of Sam, this guy he's tough as nails," Macdonald said. "The second play of the game—I just asked him if I could share this—but he cracked his rib on the second play of the game. So he was playing the whole game without making a name of it and playing his tail off and competing. I think it's worth noting how tough this guy is. He'll be back sooner than later, I'm sure."

As for Lock, Seattle's backup quarterback has been limited in practice the past two weeks due to an elbow injury, and was inactive as the team's emergency third quarterback for the last two games, with Jalen Milroe serving as the backup.

"He's able to throw. How much? We're working through that right now," Macdonald said.

Macdonald noted that while Lock might still be limited in how much he throws, it will be different than when Darnold barely threw at all prior to playing in Seattle's Divisional Round win over the 49ers, the result of an oblique injury.

"He's going to throw the ball throughout the week, but we're just going to manage it," Macdonald said of Lock. "He's not going to take 8,000 throws."

Macdonald also noted that the Seahawks "might be adding a quarterback" to add depth behind Lock and Milroe.

With Lock not 100 percent, the Seahawks will make sure Milroe is also getting enough reps to be ready to play on Sunday.

"They'll be splitting reps for a certain amount of time," Macdonald said. "We just have to take it day by day at this point, but Jalen will take some practice reps as well. Today's a slow day, so it's kind of hard to tell. We have a plan for Drew to get some live throws later, but it's just one of those things, we just kind of have to work it day in and day out and figure out what's the best way to get him to Sunday."

Lock has already started one game this season and played almost all of two games, taking over after Darnold suffered a glute injury early in the season opener, then starting in Seattle's Week 2 win at Arizona. In those two games, Lock completed 72.9 percent of his passes, throwing for 422 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, giving him a 127.3 passer rating.
