Seahawks Disappointed In Loss To Rams, But Feel Like They Have  'Everything Ahead Of Us'

The Seahawks suffered a tough loss to the Rams on Sunday, but came out of the game confident in where they’re headed as a team.

INGLEWOOD—The Seahawks nearly pulled off the unlikeliest of comebacks against one of the NFL's best teams.

The Seahawks turned the ball over four times and trailed throughout the game, but thanks to an outstanding game by the defense, they were still within striking distance in the fourth quarter, trailing by nine points when they got the ball back at their own 16-yard line with six minutes left.

Sam Darnold, who threw four interceptions up to that point, calmly completed six consecutive pass attempts to get the Seahawks to the 1-yard line, where Kenneth Walker ran the ball in to make it two-point game.

After the defense came up with yet another stop, the Rams pinned Seattle at the 1-yard line with 1:41 left thanks to an absurdly great punt, and Darnold and company went back to work, driving as far as the L.A. 43-yard line before, with 1 second left, Jason Myers came on for a 61-yard game-winning field goal attempt. Myers, who had made four field goals up to that point, including a 57-yarder, missed short and to the right, and the Rams escaped with a thrilling, and quite frankly bizarre 21-19 victory.

The loss dropped the Seahawks to 7-3 for the season, one game behind the Rams, who improved to 8-2, and it also ended a franchise-record 10-game road winning streak. It was undoubtedly a disappointing outcome for the Seahawks, who, without all the turnovers, or without settling for field goals on three drives that got inside the Rams' 15-yard line, could have very well earned a fifth straight win. But what this loss was not, for the Seahawks, was discouraging.

"I'm proud of our guys for fighting," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonld said. "We've got a heck of a group, some tough dudes that fight to the very end. We're about three yards short from putting ourselves in a great position to go win the game, given all the things that happened throughout the game. We're going to learn from this and we're going to move forward and we're going to get better from it."

"Obviously very disappointed we lost, you want to be able to win a game like that given all the circumstances, but we didn't. But it's a long season and we'll move forward."

The Seahawks still have seven games left on the schedule, and will face the Rams again in Seattle next month, so this loss, however difficult to stomach in the moment, is far from being a season-altering defeat. The key for the Seahawks, however, is to learn from their mistakes that cost them this game so they can perform better when they see the Rams in Week 16 and even possibly for a third time in the postseason if both teams continue on their current trajectories.

"We're going to be seeing a lot of these guys," Macdonald said. "We're going to see him twice a year, possibly three (times), and to me it's, who evolves best from game to game, who learns from it, who grows the most is going get the advantage every time we play. Every time we play it's an absolute know-down, drag-out fight."

"Obviously we're disappointed, but it's very clear to me that we have a great team. We're going to learn to win games like that, and we're going to learn from week like this. We're young, you've got a young head coach, I'm learning how to prepare our team from week-to-week, so we're all learning, we're all growing. I actually think that's a competitive advantage for us as we start to grow. We are willing to grow and evolve, given any circumstances, but we have to keep doing that. You've got to keep attacking that type of process and keep learning, and that's the way we'll get better so we can put ourselves in position to win games like this."

A big reason the Seahawks feel good about their future, despite a tough loss, is how complete they are a team. Despite a rough outing Sunday, there's no denying that Seattle's offense has been outstanding this season, and even on a four-turnover day, they still scored 19-points with one touchdown erased by a holding penalty, and another denied by a great diving pass breakup that denied Rashid Shaheed his first touchdown as a Seahawk. On defense, the Seahawks were able to cool off Matt Stafford, who has been the league's hottest quarterback for the past month, and hold the Rams to a season-low 12 first downs and 249 total yards, their second lowest output of the season.

"I think we're a good team," said linebacker Ernest Jones IV. "We turned the ball over four times, and we lost by two points. We had a touchdown taken back, and Shaheed is a hand away from scoring another touchdown. We're a good team, we just didn't execute and capitalize, and we had mistakes and they didn't. They played a clean game and they got the win. But as a team, I think we're in good shape. We're still in a good spot, one loss doesn't define us. We've got a lot of football left."

Jones, one of Seattle's defensive leaders, was one of the first players on the field after Darnold's last two interceptions, going out of his way to talk to offensive players to let them know the defense had their back. That connectedness between the offense and defense, even when the defense was repeatedly being put in bad spots, is just another reason the Seahawks are excited about their future even after a rough outing.

"It doesn't surprise me," Macdonald said of Jones and others showing support for the offense. "Our guys love each other, we're connected, and we've got each other's back. We've had games where the offense has picked us up on defense, and vice versa."

Jones, who gave an emphatic, not to mention R-rated, endorsement of Darnold after the game, said of having the offense's back,

"You have to. Regardless of what side is struggling—we've all struggled at some point and the other side's lifted us up. That's all I was doing, just trying to do my best to keep the guys motivated regardless of what's going on, 'Still a lot of ball left, let's keep going.'"

Obviously, the Seahawks would have preferred to have left Los Angeles with a win and sole possession of first place, but in a way, coming so close to victory over a great opponent despite such a sloppy day on offense had them feeling encouraged about what they can be as a team when they clean up those mistakes.

"There's a lot of stuff we're going to look at and be like, 'Man, there's so much to fix, there's so much to be better at,'" receiver Cooper Kupp said. "We're a really good football team. We're a really good football team. We were that close, and by our standards offensively we played a very poor game. The loss hurts, but the camaraderie of the guys, the energy in that locker room, we're going to continue to fight, and we've got everything ahead of us, so I'm excited about that."

Said outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, "There's a lot of ball left, there's a lot of season left for guys to go out there and rewrite what happened today, right our wrongs. We just take away that we're a team that fights, we're a team that doesn't give up in any situation."
