When the Seahawks went on their playoff run, ultimately leading them all the way to a Super Bowl win against the New England Patriots on February 8, the Seahawks also shortened what would be their "normal" offseason timeline and preparation. Though their time was shortened, they still feel prepared and "on course" for the first step of their offseason draft process, the NFL Combine this week.
The 2026 NFL Combine is in Indianapolis where scouts, head coaches, coaches and general managers will spend a week evaluating players who could potentially become the next Seahawks. This year is different, compared to more recent years because of the quick turnaround from the Super Bowl to the combine.
Matt Berry Seattle's vice president of player acquisition said, "Maybe more fatigue, more accelerated. We just finished our pre-combine meetings [last week]. So we've gotten through the same amount of players we would normally get through."
The Seahawks tried to keep the process as similar to past years as possible, adjusting when and where they needed to, which meant meeting about all things combine while they were in Santa Clara during Super Bowl week.
"We did our backboard meetings at the combine (in previous years), so we did it in Santa Clara, which was a lot of fun. So we feel prepared, and now we know the questions we need to get answered, and we're ready to go answer them in Indiana, and in March, and then come back in April, and button it up, try to figure out who the next Seahawks are."
Aaron Hineline director of college scouting added, "The show goes on. The combine dates don't change, nothing like that. We've had to adjust a little bit here from a meeting perspective, but everything else has been on course for the most part. So we're on track. Some things were sped up, we've become more efficient in our process, which has been good."
Another change this year is unlike last year, the Seahawks have limited draft capital. Last year, the Seahawks had 11 draft picks, and this year Seattle currently holds just four.
"It's usually not static," Berry said. "You're picking in a different spot, picking 32 and 64 and 96, and then in the sixth round. So that's different, but we'll see. John [Schneider} always loves to move around. He's aggressive and [we'll] see what we end up with."
Hineline said despite the limited capital, they move through the process as they usually would, making sure to find the best talent with "Seahawks DNA" as possible.
"We have picks, but we still have to find good players, no matter where we're picking the draft too," he said. "We still have to go through our draft process like normal. We've always been able to move and kind adjust and with our process and gain picks or trade away picks. John's pretty good about being fluid. But it doesn't really change."
And despite picking last in the first round, their mindset is to always find the best talent no matter if they're picking No. 1 or No. 32.
"Every pick we're going to find a good player," Hineline said. "It's just how we acquire them. So, that doesn't really change."
Although, the Super Bowl run and win have sped up the process, one thing that remains the same is the kind of players they are seeking out.
"You're always trying to add good football players that have Seahawks DNA," Berry said. "That are competitive, that love ball, that want to be in the building, that are connected with their teammates. There was a really cool ethos around this team and how much they cared for each other. And they didn't want to leave. They were sad that the season was over. So you're trying to stack guys that are really good players that fit that, that fit that mentality. And that's no different than this time last year. You're just picking in a different spot. So, you have to unearth those guys."
"It's high-end competitors that are passionate about the process of football coming to work and talking the game, studying the game, learning the game, and approachable, the growth mindset, and they just love being around their brothers. They love being in the locker room and on the practice field, and this is their priority. It's not so much being a football player. It's about ball. Those high-end competitors that are physical and tough, and have that kind of passion for football, are the guys we're looking for."
Hineline said it's also players that, "Love football. Guys that need it. They're good with the, the monotonous and pushing through that. Guys that are smart, guys that are tough, guys that are driven, and guys that love it, love football. They love being in the building."
After finishing up a second season under head coach Mike Macdonald, the scouting department has a great grasp on what exactly Macdonald and the coaching staff are looking for and the types of players that would make sense for the team.
"I think the more time you're with people, the more shared language you have," Berry said. "And so, we know what they're looking for. We know the types of people that fit in each room, and we know what we're trying to find out together, so it makes the process easier."
Berry added, "The more specificity we have from that side, the better we are at our jobs. So, from a schematic standpoint, what we're looking for each position, and then from a makeup standpoint."
And the scouts also have a good understanding of what new Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Fleury is looking for.
"The higher [priority] was one, for continuity, and I think Brian (Fleury) is awesome, and we met with him [last week], and went over any of the differences, or the nuances that are a little bit different from Klint [Kubiak] to Brian, and we're comfortable with those. It's not that much different. This is the third year in a row we've done this with the offensive side of the ball. So, we feel pretty confident in our ability to adjust to the little intricacies of, of what would be different with Brian compared to Klint, but there are no major shifts."
