Josh Jobe Has More To Prove: 'I Can't Just Have One Game Define Me'

After going from a practice squad player to a starter last season, Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe is hoping to build on what he accomplished in 2024.

Players getting their call up from practice squad to the 53-man roster is a regular transaction in the NFL. One that happens weekly for different players, or sometimes reoccurring players, throughout the season. And sometimes those players get the call up and make an impression so great they get signed to the roster and get regular playing time. Stories like that are ones that Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald and defensive coordinator Aden Durde enjoy sharing.

"I love telling the story because this time last year, he wasn't playing for us," Macdonald said. "This is a guy that has come in and really bought into the process, and the details matter for him, and he does it every day. There's a consistency there that you respect, and he's earned these opportunities, which is really cool. If you were the coach of the team, wouldn't you want it to work like that? Guys coming in, earning their opportunities, developing, growing as players, as people, that's what he's done."

Josh Jobe is described as quiet by his teammates but is the opposite when he's on the field.

"He brings a lot of energy," Ernest Jones IV said. "Brings a lot to this team, a lot of physicality that we need on that side at that position. So, I love playing with Josh."

Jobe is a player who, in 2024, went from being a practice squad member to earning a starting role. Injuries at cornerback last season opened the opportunity for Jobe and he took advantage. From Week 7 through the remainder of the season, he played in some capacity and finished the year with one interception, seven passes defensed, and 37 tackles in six starts and 10 games played.

"That's one of my favorite things since I've been here," Durde said of Jobe's growth. "I actually said it to the defense last week, to see him come in and basically this time last year he was on the practice squad and to push himself and compete and be on the field I think is a credit to him as a player and him as a man."

In Week 1, Jobe had one of the defensive highlights, an interception of Brock Purdy, as well as a pass defensed and two tackles.

"Yeah, I got the interception, but you know there's plenty more games," Jobe said. "I can't just have one game define me. I got to keep going and just keep being me and be a team player."

That mentality is one aspect his teammates enjoy about playing with him.

Jones IV said, "Man comes to work every day, doesn't really say too much, but you can look into his eyes and see, 'Man, I'm here with you. I'm ready to fight.' Jobe's our little quiet dog."

A fellow teammate, while not sharing quite the same story, but one similar to making the most of their opportunities is Coby Bryant, who says it's "extremely exciting" to watch Jobe.

"I mean just the confidence that he's brought in the building from Week 1 and just to go out there and see him make the plays that he made. He's a hard worker. Comes in, listens, and he competes too."

Being around players like Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Bryant have made Jobe better.

"They've been here way before me and I feed off all those guys," he said." They're a high standard. They play with a chip on their shoulder and that made me play with the chip on my shoulder as well. They just go out there and play... They just play with their heart. So that's why I feed off them."

That mindset also creates healthy competition between teammates.

"I know from me and Mike's conversation, that's what you want from a team," Durde said. "If competition is the be all and end all and people that are playing good play, I think that's coming from where I've come from and coaching the D-line. I think that's how you create the best group of people when competition is at its highest and people are trying to get on the field and they want to maximize when they're on the field and make plays when they're on the field and do their job at the highest place. What you see is that it's not just people get reps, they start maximizing their reps and then you get really good play."

Jobe knows that even with that mindset the players on the defense are going to have his back regardless.

"We all have a high standard of our playing style, and those guys got my six all the way. Just believing each other, one another and just playing with each other. Just playing for one another."
