The Seahawks held their final public practice of training camp, welcoming some of their young fans for a "Kids Day" at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
Fans young and old were treated to a spirited session that was the Seahawks' penultimate practice before Saturday's preseason opener against the Cowboys. Here are five observations from Thursday's practice:
1. The year-over-year progress in the passing game is noticeable.
As Sam Darnold hit big throw after big throw, including a couple of deep balls to Rashid Shaheed, it might be easy to forget that, at this time last year, the offense was still finding itself. Yes, it was obvious last summer that Jaxon Smith-Njigba was emerging as a true No. 1 receiver, but there was also a bit of uncertainty about an offense that was adjusting to an entirely new scheme, a new quarterback and several other new players at key positions.
A year later, the Seahawks offense has 10 of 11 starters from the Super Bowl back with the team, as well as most of their key depth pieces, and while the Seahawks do have a new offensive coordinator in Brian Fleury, there is still a lot of carryover, schematically, from what they were doing under Klint Kubiak last season.
The result of all that continuity has been a much crisper offense and passing game than the one we saw in camp last season. The real test of the running game will come in the preseason and even more so in the regular season with live tackling, but there have been encouraging signs there too, and with Darnold throwing to Smith-Njigba, Shaheed, Cooper Kupp and the rest of a talented receiving corps, not to mention a great group of tight ends and pass-catching backs, the Seahawks offense is off to very strong start despite competing against the NFL's top defense.
2. Devon Witherspoon passion continues to stand out in practice.
Cornerback Devon Witherspoon produced one of the top defensive highlights of the day, leaping in front of a Drew Lock pass intended for Tory Horton for an impressive sideline interception. Witherspoon was fired up, as expected, after the big play, but maybe stood out even more was the way Witherspoon reacted with frustration after short completion over the middle of the field to a receiver he was covering. Witherspoon is a three-time Pro Bowler and a second-team All-Pro; he is undoubtedly one of the best players in the NFL at his position, yet it still really bothers him when the offense completes a run-of-the-mill pass in an August training camp practice. Witherspoon is also going to be just as fired up for a teammate's big play as he is when he makes the play himself, which was on display when he sprinted onto the field to celebrate a pass breakup made by undrafted rookie Jordan Washington.
3. Jake Bobo, who recently returned from injury, had a big day.
Jake Bobo, who missed a portion of camp earlier this month, has been back in action for a few days, and on Thursday the fourth-year receiver had one of his best days of camp so far. Bobo had a touchdown from Jalen Milroe in a red-zone drill, and had several more catches throughout practice, highlighting why he was a priority to re-sign this offseason.
4. The tight ends continue to shine in Brian Fleury's offense.
Maybe it's because offensive coordinator Brian Fleury used to be a tight ends coach, or maybe it's just because the Seahawks have a lot of talented tight ends, or maybe it's just the way NFL offenses are trending, but whatever the reason, it's pretty evident that tight ends, especially AJ Barner and Elijah Arroyo, will be a big part of Seattle's passing game.
Arroyo, who has been a standout throughout camp, added several nice catches to a training camp full of them, while Barner had one of the biggest plays of the day, catching a Jalen Milroe pass over the middle that was dropped just over a leaping Patrick O'Connell for a big catch and run.
There are only so many targets to go around in any given game, and the Seahawks have a lot of talent at receiver, but Seattle's tight ends are clearly going to have a big role in this year's offense.
5. Players showed their appreciation for the fans after the final open practice of camp.
Seahawks fans play a big role in creating an exciting atmosphere during the early stages of training camp, and Thursday's practice was the final one that will be attended by fans. Knowing that, players spent extra time signing autographs or posing for selfies with fans. Players take care of the fans after every practice, but they went above and beyond on Thursday, with several players still out on the field signing for fans more than 40 minutes after practice had ended.
