All throughout training camp Devon Witherspoon has been flying around like usual, making plays and showing why he's a three-time Pro Bowler in just as many seasons. He brings energy and a fiery personality that his teammates gravitate towards, and while he is eligible for a contract extension, Witherspoon isn't letting that get in the way of all things training camp.
"I'm not worried about that right now," Witherspoon said. "I'm out here to focus on making plays and trying to get better day by day. We got other stuff we're focused on. We're just trying to win games, so that's the stuff I'm focused on right now."
Some players in situations similar to Witherspoon would report for training camp, but sit out of practice until they get a deal done, but Witherspoon knows that's not what's best for himself or more importantly the team.
"We got a long season ahead of us, contract or not," he said. "We still got to play football at the end of the day. We have to be out there and be prepared. If you're not practicing, you're not getting ready for the season because everybody else in the league is practicing and they're getting better. That's where my mind is at right now. I'm focused on what I need to do right now, I'm not really worried about anything else."
A few weeks ago, head coach Mike Macdonald said he was "impressed" by Witherspoon's commitment to practicing.
"It's something that you really aren't used to dealing with as a player," Macdonald said. "To be able to take whatever's going on in that front and compartmentalize that, shows you his maturity and his commitment to the team. And his own personal development, too. How much he loves football, and how he wants to be out here and try to get better. I really respect his approach so far, it has been great."
While a deal is likely to get done, it's clear that Witherspoon and Macdonald are not concerned about when that gets done.
"That's John's (Schneider) area, but I can tell you this," Macdonald said. "I couldn't have more confidence in our process and all the people involved in the whole operation. I'm just really confident right now in where we are with Spoon (Devon Witherspoon) and all his people and the way that we do business. Spoon's doing a great job. He's practicing his tail off. He's the same guy and nothing's changed. We're just operating as usual right now."
In the first episode of HBO's Hard Knocks, Seahawks general manager/president of football operations John Schneider was interviewed about Witherspoon's contract extension.
"We've had negotiations over the last 17 years that haven't been real fun, but every individual's different," he said. "It's the person, right? So Spoon was just like this great, high-energy, you know, vibrant guy. We all have the same goal in mind, and we'd love to get that done because Spoon's a great player."
In that same episode, Witherspoon said he's trying not to let the contract talks get in the way of being the best.
"I mean, it's just a hard job to play, so when you got a guy who can really shut down a receiver or could be versatile, like I am, you don't come across those guys often for real," he said. "We got a premier corner like this, it's just, you pay him, like, please pay him. That's all I, that's all we're saying. But it's not really something that's on my mind right now. My mind is, go win football games, bro. We trying to be the best team that we could be for this year. And stuff like that just gets in the way of doing that. Like, when you just put it to the side and let God handle that situation, it's easy to just focus on the task at hand, which is getting better every day. Training camp, battling these guys every day, competing every day. You just focus on playing football."
