Head Coach Mike Macdonald
Opening Statement
Just really proud of our football team. After coming off a loss, and you're disappointed in how you started the season, and just the resolve on our team -- all the things. You've got to come across the country, a 10:00 a.m. start. This is a great atmosphere to play a football game. A tough atmosphere to play a football game. They've got great fans. It's a great atmosphere. And then the game wasn't pretty early. There's a lot of things we've got to clean up operation wise and taking care of the football and spotted them several points.
I think probably added up to about 11 points, missed a field goal. And our guys didn't flinch. We knew it was going to be really tough coming in here. We knew there would be times where our backs were against the wall, but our guys were awesome the whole game, and just fought to the very end. And we've got a couple of breaks there in the second half that went our way, and we took advantage of it. Really proud of the team. Looking forward to the flight back. But once we get back, we'll be back to work and try to go 1-0 this week.
What can you say about the job your defense, shorthanded in the secondary, facing an all-time great quarterback
Our coaches deserve a lot of credit getting Derion [Kendrick] ready to go and D Bell [D'Anthony Bell]. It's hard to learn our system in two weeks, and D.K. [Kendrick] I thought played a really good game. Obviously had the interception, which was a tremendous play, a game changing play and the rest of the defense --1think right now we're playing really, really hard. And I think the details came to life more this game. And so looking forward to watching the tape and trying to get better.
How about the way the guys up front played, three sacks from the defensive line?
You know me and sacks. It's rush and coverage working together. You need time to get to the quarterback. And those are team sacks, but our guys are playing really hard and playing together. And we should only get better from here on out.
How much does Jay Harbaugh drill your guys about things like that kickoff situation?
I wish I could say. We went over it Friday night. You have to talk rules. You've got to know the rules of the game and play by them better than everybody else. But I can't tell you when exactly we talked about it. But it's a heck of a play by George [Holani], understanding the situation and then staying inbounds and recovering it, which actually Brian Eayrs talked about it, sideline recoveries as a matter offact. So Brian Eayrs deserves a lot of credit, too. But George made heck of a play.
And the kick from Jason [Myers], kind of done a bunch of short kicks already this season.
It's great, it's tougher than it looks because the landing zone is, it's easy to kick it short in the landing zone. So if you're going to kick it low you've got to be on your stuff and he's on his stuff now.
Is it your understanding that when it went over that it didn't touch him, like it was a live ball situation with the kickoff?
We were just going to pick it up. Any ball on the ground we're picking it up no matter the situation let it play out.
What did you make of the way Sam [Darnold] played? And obviously the interceptions, but otherwise --
Had some adversity early, but it's not like I'm talking to him the whole game, I'm looking at him, the guy's stone cold out there and just keeps playing. When we finally close it out there at the end you saw the emotion, saw the excitement. He deserves it. He played a really good game.
What did you think of your rookies, Tory Horton catches the touchdown, Elijah Arroyo with the catch?
It was big. He's been doing it all camp. That's why we train the way we train. You're in a tough atmosphere, but we're executing like we do on an OTA number three. We're trying to have the same mentality. And he's done it consistently. So I'm happy for Tory.
When you look at your offense, what happened in the second half, all those things. ls that closer to the vision of what you'd like to see on offense?
Yeah, marrying the run and the pass, staying on schedule, creating explosives. Jax [Jaxon Smith-Njigba] had a great catch, that was a great throw and catch. And we're kind of like in a third-and-goal from the whatever yard line, that's tough. We're trying to bleed some clock, maybe pop a run, and we did.The guys blocked their tails off and Ken [Walker 111]made a heck of a run.
Can't wait to watch the tape. I'm sure there's a lot of details that we need to get cleaned up. Again, let's use this now-- it went from what's the big difference between Week 1 and Week 2? We need to make a big jump from Week 1 to Week 2. I feel we did. We're not satisfied. We need to keep growing and keep getting better as a team.
What was the biggest jump?
I felt like our operations, the timing of the pass game was really good. I thought our protection plan was awesome. Situational football, I felt like the third down playing was awesome. The guys execute. I don't know what the numbers were on third down, but I felt it was better than last week.
Had some critical third downs especially on the first drive. To go down on the first drive, execute the third down, keep the drive going and then punch it in. Starting with a lead is really nice. We need to do that more often.
How well did you spread the ball around on offense?
That's kind of what I was trying to get at last week. This offense is designed to get the ball to everybody. And I felt like it did that today. And we're on our way on that front.
What was the mood at halftime? Because you guys dominated the game statistically, but it was 14-7?
We didn't bat an eye. Our guys are awesome. We knew what we had to do. The defense going out there, I think --did they get a field goal on that drive, on the drive coming out of the third quarter? I think they did. They caught that play on the sideline. But our guys are great. We knew what we needed to do. We knew we needed to get a stop. We needed to attack the ball. We needed a takeaway on defense. We did those things.
What did you think of Klint Kubiak's change from Week 1 to Week 2?
Look, this is what we do. We're an under-center team and gun change-ups, and at some point you have to pass the ball. But we're committed to what we do and what we've done all camp and what we've built systematically. I thought our game plan was great. I thought Klint called a great game, deserves a lot of credit. Honestly, I'm most excited about where we're going. I've seen us execute throughout the offseason. I saw us bedisappointed after last week, and I've seen us have resolve and bounce back and be determined about getting better and committed to this team.
It's easy to kind of lose hope after you get that initial feedback that it might not be working, but our guys are trusting the process and we're sticking to it.
How big was the stop when they got to the 5?
I'm really happy you asked that, because Riq [Woolen] had a tough week. And I thought he played a tremendous football game. And what people don't realize is we missed a ton of tackles. C.P. [Chris Partridge] is going to have a field day on tomorrow with the tape. But Riq is the guy that chased him down from the backside. Talk about ultimate effort, committed to the process, having your teammates' back, playing with shocking effort, he does that, and he got hit down and we ended up leaving that drive with no points. We defended a blade of grass and Riq was the guy that deserves a ton of credit on that front and helped us win the football game. I'm really proud of Riq. He's done a great job this week.
Question about Jalen Sundell
Jalen, he cramped, I think, in his leg. So I don't think it's anything serious. There's really no other injuries to report.
Was that Riq's contact?
I believe so, yeah.
You mentioned the third down having more efficiency there. How did you see that after the catch impact this game compared to last, especially Cooper Kupp, seemed like he had a couple of times where he was about to really--
I said a couple times in the headsets, when he makes those plays, that's Cooper Kupp. Let's remind ourselves who this guy is. I mean, the run after the catch is going to be a really important part of our offense. Timing is crucial. And you've got to take advantage of it when you give him those opportunities.I felt like the guys did a great job extending plays and moving the ball forward.
The play he made, the third down on the last touchdown drive, the pressure-
It was a critical play in the game. But that's the Sam [Darnold] we know and love. That's the guy that shows up on tape. He's done it his whole career, and he's doing it for us. And really a heads-up play. A.J. [Barner] understood to uncover and get in the scramble drill, I thought that was a tremendous play. It really changed the tide of the game, frankly, because we went down and scored.
Devon Witherspoon...
You know Spoon as good as anybody. If it was physically possible for him to do it, he would have done it.We just couldn't get there. Probably most prudent decision not to have him go.
QB Sam Darnold
Opening Statement:
Obviously a great result today. Like Ikind of mentioned in the Fox postgame interview, but a lot of stuff to clean up offensively. But at the end of the day, we'll take a win every single day, every single Sunday. For our defense and special teams to play the way they did, especially that special teams touchdown, one of the more interesting plays that I've seen in my career. But it was just great to be able to see our guy,George [Holani] get in the end zone that way. And it was just a great team win. The way that-- I feel like at halftime, you know, guys could have let up or let down, and I feel like in the locker room, it was just very positive energy. And we knew that we had a chance to go out there and play really good football and win this ball game. I felt like our guys did a really good job of going out there and executing in the second half.
You said it was positive energy at halftime. What was the exact message what were you talking about at the game dominating?
I was just saying I think -- and the coaches going right into kind of the plan and what our halftime adjustments were. And then for me personally just letting the guys know, if we don't turn the ball over, we're marching right down the field, whatever, kicking field goals or scoring touchdowns. Obviously we'd like to score touchdowns, but I feel like we were driving the football really well. And there were just a couple bad plays on my end that I'm obviously going to clean up, watch the tape and get better from. But I felt like there was a lot to go into the second half optimistic about.
You talked in the past about when people ask about your leadership style being consistent. ls this the type of game you really need to lean on that to not react (inaudible)?
At the end of the day, I've seen -- I've been around a lot of football, especially in this league-- and I've seen it go a bunch of different ways. That guy was obviously very tight going into the second half. Might not have felt that way, but our guys knew what the situation was. We knew that we were going to be able to go out there and play really good football, like I said. And felt like we did that.
What did you like about the way Klint (Kubiak) called the offense today to get more guys involved? Seemed like you guys were able to distribute the football to a lot of players, (indiscernible) having a big game, Tory with the touchdown.
I think at the end of the day, we put ourselves in good positions on first and second down to get us into good third downs, third and manageables. And we converted a lot of those third downs, I think. Not exactly sure on the exact numbers but felt like we were staying on the field longer. And, yeah, just I think that was the difference, converting third downs to being able to stay on the field to be able to call the plays that we want to call. And so I'm always confident in the way that Clint will call a football game.
The third down on the last drive, where you escaped pressure, how would you describe that?
My progression was starting on the right side and just felt a guy coming loose up the middle. He picked --1was trying to figure out what side he was going to pick on me. He picked the right side so I was able to spin out to the left. And A.J. did an incredible job offeeling me scramble, even though he was kind of chipping his way out. And I was able to get to get him the ball.
Was he supposed to chip that whole play or was (inaudible)?
Yeah, he was supposed to chip and then get out. But obviously there's certain times when he doesn't and he needs to stay in. It was a great job. Again, I've got to watch the tape to see what exactly happened on that play. But he did a great job of, like I said, feeling my escape and getting out there for me.
Jaxon said that deep ball you guys had, you guys had been setting up that up over the course of the game. What does it feel like for your coordinator to make that call at that stage of the game when you have a chance to put it away eventually with a deep ball (indiscernible)?
Wefelt on one of the plays, especially I think it was in the third quarter, the safety just driving, driving on one of our plays. That's when I took a shot to Tory deep, but it fell incomplete. But we had a little opportunity there, and we knew that we had a chance to be able to make that same play. They played a little bit different coverage with no safety help. But I was able to-- that's a ball that me and Jax have thrown ever since the start of OTAs. I felt very confident about that one.
The way Ken finished the drive, (indiscernible) from the 19 doesn't seem like a high-percentage run play (indiscernible)?
It was an incredible play to watch from my angle. Just thinking I'm going to pitch it. And I'm always confident. Let me start by saying I'm always confident in our guys that we'll be able to go third-and-19 no matter what, we're going to be able to score. But I was kind of pitching it just telling him, hey, stay inbounds here; we need the clock to run. And getting ready to send the field goal unit on. Sure enough, he breaks a couple of tackles, and I knew he had a chance. But Ken's got a chance every single play he touches the rock. It was an incredible play by him and our offensive line.
What can you say about the way the defense kind of kept you guys in early (indiscernible)?
Again, not necessarily taking care of the ball the way that I would have loved to in the first half. And, again, our defense and our special teams, you know, the way they played throughout that first half kept us in the game. And felt like we were able to kind of finally play the style of ball that we wanted to in the second half. It wasn't necessarily the way exactly the way we wanted to play, but we were able to protect the football and march down the field.
