Featuring postgame quotes from the following:
Head Coach Mike Macdonald
Opening statement
It's a great football game. Two really good teams, two great teams going after it. Proud of our guys for fighting. We got a heck of a group, some tough dudes that fight to the very end. We're about three yards short from putting ourselves in a great position to go win the game given all the things that happened throughout the game. We're going to learn from this and we're going to move forward. We're going to get better from it and really prep. It is what it is. But the Rams are a really good team and we need to be able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the red zone. We knew we were going to have to take care of the football, and we didn't do that. We took it away once on defense and we have to make the ball come left a little bit more on defense as well. We're going to recoup. We're going to get back and attack the heck out of this week just like we would if the field goal went in. But I'm encouraged by our group, obviously very disappointed we lost. You want to be able to win a game like that given all circumstances, but we didn't. But it's a long season and we'll move forward.
On update for rookie LG Grey Zabel
Yeah, it's his knee, no update. We'll get an image and see what's going on.
On his assessment of QB Sam Darnold's interceptions
Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure. It's probably a combination of multiple things so we'll attack it and figure out what we can do to not put the ball in jeopardy. But that's why I told them. Given everything that happened, you get pinned back at the one-yard line. It's a heck of a punt by the guy and we just kept battling. Sam put us in the best position possible to win the game. So, we'll look at it and learn from it.
On how the Seahawks defense played
Our guys fought incredibly hard. I thought we executed well, gave them some tough spots. That's what we talk about. All the things we talk about. (inaudible) to the football. It would have been great to have another red zone stop. But proud of our guys. Our guys stuck together, had a great attitude, and played tough as nails so we'll look at it. We'll see what happens and we're going to be seeing a lot of these guys. We're going to see them twice a year, possibly three, and to me it's who evolves best from game to game? Who learns from that? Who grows the most is going to get the advantage every time we play. But every time we play, it's been an absolute knock-down down drag-out fight.
On his message to the team
Just what I'm telling you guys. Obviously, we're disappointed but it's very clear to me that we have a great team and we're going to learn to win games like that. We're going to learn from weeks like this and all that. Again, we're young. You got a young head coach. I'm learning how to prepare our teams from week-to-week so we're all learning. We're all growing. I actually think that's like a competitive advantage for us as we start to grow. We are willing to grow and resolve, given any circumstance, but we have to keep doing that. You have to keep tackling that type of process and keep learning and that's the way we'll get better so we can put ourselves in a better position to win games like this.
On Seahawks' LB Ernest Jones trying to pick up the offense after the interceptions
I didn't see that, but it doesn't surprise me to hear that. Our guys love each other. We're connected and we have each other's backs. We've had games where the offense has picked us up on defense and vice versa so I'm not surprised to hear that.
On what you tell your QB after a performance like Darnold's
Keep ripping it, man. We love you and we got your back.
On if he noticed Darnold's demeanor change at all
I thought he was great. Sam's like an ultimate competitor and so he's going to be pissed. That's what we loves about him. But he's going to 'bow up' and he going to keep rocking back. That's how we had to play to go try to win the game.
On Seahawks' WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba's one-handed sideline catch
He's a phenomenal player and he got his feet down. I probably should've gone faster because they were out of timeouts so we were worried about (inaudible).
On what changed defensively after the Rams' first few possessions
Settle down in terms of the game plan. You came in and you're trying to figure out what they're going to do. We have initial plans and you have to move and shift and they got us a couple of times. But we go back, recoup, make adjustments, and our guys did a great job. But that offense has not been behind schedule. They haven't had any third downs in like the whole year. They're playing at an incredibly efficient rate. I thought our guys did a great job on first-and-10 and on early downs to get in beyond the sticks, especially in the second half.
On how he liked the way he mixed up his cornerbacks
It'd be interesting. If you earn the right to play, we're going to play you. It's a blessing and a curse because we have great defensive backs that we want to be able to play. There are only so many spots so it's not like we're demoting people or anything. It's really like a promotion. It's like, hey, you guys are all starters except there are only so many snaps to go around so we're all going to play, rotate, match up, and do all that type of stuff. [Safety] Nick [Emmanwori] playing dime gave us some flexibility to be stout against the running dime. I thought we performed well there as well. I'm assuming we'll stick to it, but it's subject to change every week. Everybody's under evaluation.
On what he thought of his team's running game
Good. I don't know our final stats. I think our coaches are doing a good job of getting to plays down the list and making adjustments. I'm eager to see us watch it. I thought we ran it better later in the game.
On his thoughts of QB Matthew Stafford's performance and reducing his yardage
Stafford is a premier quarterback in our league. He's probably in the Hall of Fame. The guy is a great player. He's a hard guy to attack. He's really hard. They got a great scheme and they're really well-coached. You can't let him be in first-and-10 all the time. Otherwise, they can call in playing the book. You have to get him into passing situations and then you have to play rush and coverage. It's like we've tried to do all year and our guys did a great job of that, but he's a phenomenal player.
On if he wishes he changed the play calling on the last drive before halftime
I mean, I'd rather score but we didn't score. It possibly fourth down if we would've gotten closer. We're not in the business of giving the ball back at the end of the half.
On the team's perception of Darnold's ability and mental state to lead a near game-winning drive after throwing four interceptions
That's part of my message to the team. The guys know that, but I'm not surprised. That's who Sam is. He's done it since day one with us and he's an ultimate competitor. He is a great quarterback and he's our quarterback. We love him.
QB Sam Darnold
Opening Remarks
A tough one today. I felt like despite the turnovers, we moved the ball well we just couldn't finish in the red zone. I think that was a big thing today. And then, like I said, I can't turn the ball over as much as I did today. I'll learn from it, watch the tape and grow from it. I have to give credit to the Rams. They're a really good defense, a really good team. I have to be better personally and I know we'll bounce back and learn and grow from this one.
On the Rams defensive set up on his interceptions
They do a good job of disguising shell and all those things. I feel like a lot of defenses do the same thing. I feel like their pass rush, their linebackers, their safeties are all on the same page and playing really good football. They do it at a high level. They seem like really smart players. But again, those are self-inflicted wounds, turning the ball over like that. Sometimes it's better just to try to throw the ball away or even take a sack when nothing is there.
On what he saw from the Rams' defensive coverage in the red zone
Again, like I said, I felt like they did a really good job of taking things away. I felt like I could have hit some throws as well. I felt like I could have moved on in some progressions and been able to check the ball down. There are a lot of different variables that go into it and like I said, we will learn from it and move on.
On the final Seahawks offensive drive
At the end of the day, I'm confident in that whole operation, special teams. They've been doing a great job all year. When it comes to us being backed up on the one-yard line, that was just let's go play ball. We're still in this despite the turnovers and all the things that happened prior to that. And that's a huge credit to our defense and the way that they played all day. I just wish I could have played better for our defense and everyone on the team. But again, like I said, it stings and it sucks. It should suck and I'm just going to continue to grind and learn from this one over the next couple days.
On what caused the energy shift ahead of the touchdown drive
We knew we were in a tempo situation. We wanted to try to score before the two-minute warning to give us any extra time out there with the two-minute warning to be able to have time on the clock to go try to win the game and kick a field goal.
On the Rams' defensive pressure on him
They do a really good job. Not only the front, but the other seven or six guys that they have out there. They make it tough. But again, that's every team in the NFL. I feel like I have to play better.
On if he's seen a team play 50% dime defense before today in the NFL
Yeah, I mean, it's interesting. I feel like that's the way that they do it too, they have got good guys up front that are all playing the gaps. And again, like the DB's play really physical when they're in there. So again, they got a really good bunch and we're just going to learn from it.
On if he should have taken a sack instead of attempting a pass to TE Elijah Arroyo that resulted in an interception
Yeah, I was just trying to get the ball out of my hands. Just a poor decision There was a lineman in the way. I didn't see the DB. I tried to make a jump pass and it just didn't work out. I've just got to dirt that one.
On how much confidence it gives him with the way their defense is playing right now
Yeah, I feel like our defense has been doing a great job all year. I have just got to continue to not turn the ball over, simple as that. I have got to do my job, protect the football, get the guys down the field, put the ball in the end zone. I feel like we'll always be in a position to win a football game if I just do that.
On if he noticed any special attention placed on WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba by the Rams defense this game
They were doing some things defensively to take him away but I think for me, even if they take Jax (Smith-Njigba) away, we have other guys that are able to make plays as well. I just have got to go through my progressions and click through it as fast as I can.
On how it felt for the offense trailing in the game since they haven't had to deal with that all year
Yeah like I said before, I feel like we were driving the ball. We had some good, 10 plus play drives out there. We just couldn't finish in the red zone. We have got to be better in the red zone. It starts with me getting the guys out there and executing at a high level and then just can't turn the ball over. I think that's the the biggest takeaway from today is just protecting the football.
On how it felt playing back home in Southern California
I wish the result would have been a little different, but it's always nice to come back to LA and get to see family after this. I'll be in a great mood to see them... It is what it is. It's fun to be back home though and see family.
On if Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak had any messages for him on the sideline after the interceptions
He just said, 'Keep playing. We're going to continue to play ball.' And we just continued to have our normal dialogue about what plays we were thinking about calling next.
