Featuring postgame quotes from the following:
Head Coach Mike Macdonald
It was a great win. Jacksonville's a really good team. They've been playing really well. You go back to process all the time, and I think we nailed our process this week, and I think the challenge is going to keep rolling. Focus on our style of ball, staying composed, staying together, picking each other up, play by play, all that type of stuff. I know it sounds cliché, but I don't really care. I thought the defense played a tremendous game. Some funky things happened there on fourth downs. You've got to give their quarterback a lot of credit. He's a really good player and made some plays there in critical moments, and we just kept rebounding and kept fighting. Offensively, we came through when we needed to. The four minute, I thought that was a heck of a play call, a couple of great play calls we had, and Sam [QB Sam Darnold] just operating. Obviously, Sam had a great game as well. Excited. Excited for this flight home. Then go play Monday Night Football.
Seven sacks today. What kind of pressure, what do you think the pass rush was looking like?
I'm going to give you the same answer, but how we played the run on early downs [inaudible]. Works together, you buy an extra second, rush can come alive. We didn't do that last week; we did it this week. That's how we've got to play moving forward. I thought the guys played great.
How is the confidence that obviously [Offensive Coordinator] Klint Kubiak has, your team, your players, everyone have in Sam Darnold showing up right now across the board?
We have 100 percent confidence in Sam. He makes great decisions. He's done that since he showed up, and he's playing great football.
What about [LB] DeMarcus Lawrence getting back in this game and doing what he did? I know he played well all season, but to have him back --
We had some guys down. Missing [LB] Derick Hall, he's a great player. Hopefully, he's back as soon as possible, but D-Law played a tremendous game. He had two sacks. To be able to play the run the way we played the run, he's one of the guys leading the charge there. Just the mentality, too. The guy is just an absolute beast.
What went into starting Shaquill [CB Shaquill Griffin], and how do you feel like that worked out?
I thought Shaq played a great game. He's been practicing really well. So smart, man. Just so smart, competes, had a great week at practice. That's why we decided to go with him. Nehemiah's [CB Nehemiah Pritchett] been playing great. He's been doing a good job. Played great on special teams. He's got a hamstring right now. So, we'll see.
What about being turnover-free against this team?
That was critical. We knew they would do that going into the game. They're an opportunistic team. The numbers speak for themselves. I thought our ball security was tremendous. We were fortunate on some of those. The tip -- there were a couple of tips where the ball was in jeopardy, so we'll look at those. Otherwise, I thought our ball security was really good.
You guys seemed to nail the end of the first half, beginning of the second half with the field goal, and then coming out after the touchdown.
That was awesome. They decided to take the ball, so that's how we want to play the end of the half. The guys did a great job.
Jaxon [WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba] has gone over 100 yards in four of six games. I don't think he's had a game with fewer than 79. What can you say about his ability to not just have a big game here and there but to do it every week?
People are going to focus on him, but when you play complementary ball on one side of the ball, if you're able to run, throw it, action, do the whole thing, it's very hard to take one player out of the game when the ball can go anywhere. He's taking advantage of his opportunities. We're doing a great job of getting him open, and Sam's got a lot of confidence in him, too. So, a lot of positives.
What about his ability to win, just to take the top off the defense? He sort of came into the NFL, maybe people kind of wrongfully pegged him as a slot underneath guy, but showing that he can --
That's a good evaluation, that they wrongfully pegged him as a slot guy. That's the answer. He's just a great receiver.
[NT] Jarran Reed left late in the game.
He's got -- like I think somebody got whipped into his knee. We'll see. I'm going to give you a timeline right now, and then I'm going to take it away on Wednesday and really disappoint you.
What did you think of the run game today?
I'm not sure of the stats. I think we can do a better job. I think there might be some more plays out there. We stuck with it, which is important. Can't give you a great answer right now, but I felt like our guys are playing really hard. I think we had like one bust in a critical situation, which we've got to see why that happened. Outside of that, keep plugging away at it. Keep plugging away at it. Keep finding solutions, evolve as the game goes. Do what we do.
I know we ask about Byron [DT Byron Murphy II] all the time, but another game, he had two sacks, and ESPN had him with seven pressures, the most the Seahawks have had in five years?
Byron had seven pressures, or we did?
No, he did.
Byron had seven on his own? That's pretty good. I'm going to claim that I was right on Byron as I've been telling you for two years.
Cooper [WR Cooper Kupp] got his first touchdown as a Seahawk. How big of a complement is he to that Seahawk corps?
Really happy for Coop. This guy is a force multiplier. I'm having a foggy brain right now, but whether it's him or Sam, bringing him into the equation, it was really important to bring him here. He's one of the biggest reasons why our team is where they're at right now. For him to have the productivity he's had behind it, too, is icing on the cake. He's playing great football for us. Just the run after the catch on that one play was just tremendous.
Then the stop on the two-point conversion, I think that was after the penalty, and they moved it closer. What did you think of that?
They were doing a hide-the-eligible play, and we had some confusion on who was eligible, who was in the game. At least I thought that's what they were doing. I could be wrong. We had a miscommunication. We had an extra guy on the field, tried to take a timeout. It was too late.
At that point, you're in goal goal-line situation on the one. You've got to match them big, and that's what we did. We didn't even align right in that play, frankly. I think Ernest [LB Ernest Jones IV] made a tremendous play to stop them. Just a relentless mindset the guys had. That was an awesome play. That's what they call picking up the coach in that situation.
[S] Nick Emmanwori had nine tackles today. He's played so little so far.
Who did you say?
Nick Emmanwori. In the time since he's been back, how have you seen him develop?
He's fighting through his ankle. It's been a long week for Nick. I think this is a great opportunity for him to take the next step in his career and learn this is what it takes to be successful in the NFL. I thought he did a great job. I think you can feel him out there on the perimeter. There are details now that we can go to work on, where we can take the game to the next level, where he can grow. That's what's exciting. You're also making adjustments with him on the sideline. It's not too big for him. He's taking it in. He understands. He's executing at a high level. Yeah, I'm excited to see where Nick takes his game. It's great to have him out there.
QB Sam Darnold
Obviously it was a great team win, first and foremost. I thought we could have done some things better on offense, especially in the second half, but again, we got the win, which is what matters.
We'll look at the tape and grow from there. But our defense, our special teams, that was -- they came up huge today. It was good to get those explosive plays, I will say, especially in the first half, but there's a lot to improve on, but we're excited about the win.
Could you take us through the long touchdown to WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba?
Yeah, we got a certain look where I'm kind of alerting the post on that. Yeah, was able to just throw it up, and Jax [WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba] made a great play tracking it. That was something we worked on OTAs, training camp, even throughout this week in practice, and we made it come to life in the game.
WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba has had four games now where he's topped 100 yards, hasn't had fewer than 79 yards in a game. What can you say about his ability to just do it every single week?
Yeah, his consistency has been amazing, just the way he's come to work every single day, the way that he practices every single day. That's a testament to the way he works and the standard that him and really Coop [WR Cooper Kupp] and a lot of the guys kind of set the standard in that room. They never waiver from it.
Last couple drives, you guys came out throwing. How much do you like the confidence and not just getting super conservative and try to put them away that way?
Yeah, we're going to go execute whatever Klint [Offensive Coordinator Kling Kubiak] asks us to do. For us to go out and throw it when we need to, run it when we need to, there's a ton of things we need to get better at, but I know that Klint is going to call the play, and we're just going to go out and execute and do our best.
Nice looking up and see TE AJ Barner wide open at the end?
Yeah, that was nice to be able to get that. Again, that's a testament to all the hard work throughout the week and AJ [Barner] understanding the kind of look we were getting for that and he did a great job of selling it.
How different is it this year's game against the Jaguars versus last year?
Some different coverages. I remember last year the single high safety, which I'm not sure I've ever seen in a game before. They kind of took advantage of me being a little greedy out there. I told myself I was going to take what they give me, and if they give me a check-down, I'm going to take it today. I felt like I did a pretty good job of that.
But, again, that's a great defense. They've got great scheme over there. That defensive coordinator does a really good job. I know Coach Coen and all of them over there do a really great job as well. So a great team, and we're really excited about where we're at as a team and the result of this one.
What have you come to trust about Jaxon Smith-Njigba?
I feel like every single day in practice we're continuing to earn that trust together and grow that confidence with each other. It's just continuing.
Taking care of the ball, that was obviously a big emphasis coming into this week?
Absolutely. Jacksonville had done a great job all year of taking the ball away from teams, and that was a huge emphasis for us to be able to take care of the football and for runners to be able to take care of the football in the open field. I feel like we did a good job of that today.
Did A.J. Barner put something in your head to be in your back pocket if they give you a man look?
We've got a ton of plays in our back pocket. There's a ton of plays we can go to, but that's a play that AJ [Barner] does a really good job at. Really all of our guys do a really great job of those routes. Got our defense a couple of times in training camp as well on that. It was a great job by not only AJ, but the offensive line and the other tight end, it might have been Sauby [TE Eric Saubert] over there on the defensive end just holding him up a little bit so I could get that one off.
Sorry if you said earlier. Did you check against that look or was it called?
Yeah, it was called. And I felt, like I said, we just did a good job executing and everyone kind of understanding and being on the same page.
Could you talk about the WR Cooper Kupp touchdown?
Yeah, again, I feel like they showed an all up look. Again, this is kind of a trend here with the execution of our offense, but it's something we've been working on for a really long time, that play specifically. Coop [WR Cooper Kupp] did a really good job of gaining outside leverage and just breaking to his spot that I knew he was going to go to. He did a great job of coming down with that one.
If there's a concern with third down, anything in particular, 1 of 10 it ended up being?
Again, it wasn't good. It wasn't good on third down. I don't think we were very great in the second half, to be quite honest, other than that last drive obviously.
We're just going to continue to improve. Look at the tape and see how we can get better and go from there.
