Good afternoon, 12s. Here's a look at what's out there today – Tuesday, August 16 – about your Seattle Seahawks.
Seahawks Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship Program Participant Amanda Ruller Coaches First NFL Game
In June, the Seattle Seahawks announcedRuller would be one of three participants of the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship Program to work with the team through minicamp, OTAs and training camp. On Saturday, Ruller got to coach her first game, as the Seahawks fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 32-25.
On the ground, the Seahawks accounted for 159 yards, with running backs DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer combining for 114 yards on just 14 carries. In limited action, rookie running back Kenneth Walker III flashed his skills, carrying the ball five times for 19 yards.
Ruller commemorating the moment of taking part in her first NFL game as a member of the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff:
Throughout the summer, Ruller's been up and down the sidelines at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton. Whether it's telling backs to lower their pad levels, or to be more explosive out of the gaps, Ruller is doing what she does best.Â
On June 14, Ruller took to the podium at OTAs to discuss her journey from Canada to Seattle, and the embrace she's gotten in the building.Â
"Every single player and coach and everybody here welcomed me in," she said. "And I want to put that out there, because a lot of people ask me that question, and I want to answer it. I felt so welcomed and so put into this organization for a reason—to help these guys. A lot of these guys said they're not ready for women to be coming up in this industry, and maybe that's the media, but these men have been learning from women their entire lives, whether that be mothers, teachers, sisters, grandmothers. And I'm just going to be part of that journey for them now."
The Regina, Saskatchewan native is a trailblazer, becoming the first participant in the Saskatchewan Roughriders' CFL Women in Football program. The McMaster University Running Backs and Special Teams coach was the running back for Team Canada in 2017, earning a Silver medal.Â
Ruller's pledge to be a groundbreaking role model for young women that want to succeed in anything in life keeps her going on the field.
As the Seahawks look ahead to Week 2 of the preseason at home against the Chicago Bears, Ruller gets another opportunity to show girls around the world that they can do it too.
