Michael Dickson took a leap of faith as a teenager in Australia, quitting Australian rules football, a sport he had enjoyed a lot of success in, to give American football a try.
The switch proved to be a massively successful one as Dickson has become the most accomplished punter in Seahawks history, and it will continue to pay off both for Dickson and the Seahawks going forward after he signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday that ties him to the team through the 2029 season.
The Seahawks traded up in the fifth-round of the 2018 draft to select Dickson, and seven years later, he is the longest continually tenured player on the roster—defensive tackle Jarran Reed is also heading into his eighth season with the Seahawks, but spent two years in Kansas City and Green Bay before returning to Seattle—a distinction not lost on Dickson.
"It's meant a lot," Dickson said after signing Tuesday morning. "You see a lot of people come through the building, and I've just been super grateful since my first year here just to wear this logo and to play in the NFL. So I've really made it a point of mine to give it everything I can in every aspect of my life, whether it's food, sleep, hydration, training, looking after my body, trying to do everything I can to make sure my mind is on point for this game, the next game and for as long as I can go. I really want to get the most out of my ability and my time here, and I never want to take it for granted at all."
Dickson earned first-team All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors as a rookie, and has established himself as one of the league's best punters and the best in franchise history over the past seven seasons. Dickson, who was named the Seahawks Top 50 Players last week, ranks third in NFL history with a 48.2 yards-per-punt average, and is the franchise all time leader in that category as well as net average (42.9), while ranking second to Jon Ryan in punts downed inside the 20 with 212.
In addition to those stats, Dickson has also created some less traditional, albeit memorable plays over the course of his career, most notably a run, from his own end zone, to clinch a win in Detroit as a rookie, and the famous "double punt" against the Rams in 2021. And while he is seven years into a successful career in the NFL, Dickson feels like he's just getting started making memories in a Seahawks uniform.
"It's crazy, because I still feel like I just came through the doors here the other day," he said. "But when you think back and think about every season and every different teammate you've had and all the memories you've created along the way, it has been quite a long time. But I don't even feel like I'm halfway yet; it's going to be a long career."
The Seahawks drafted punter Michael Dickson in the 5th round of the of the 2018 NFL Draft. Dickson has been the team's punter for seven seasons and has made one Pro Bowl and earned one All-Pro nomination.
