For Latino Heritage Month, the Seahawks visited Los Hernandez Tamales and My Little Restaurant in Yakima, WA to shine a light on Latino-owned restaurants. As part of the visit, we put together a series of Q&A's from the restaurants.

Felipe Hernandez, owner of Los Hernandez Tamales:

Tell us what inspired you to start your business.

"I was in need of a job, I thought of a business selling my sister's tamales, it was a very good product and already had a following."

What are some of the challenges or hurdles you had to overcome?

"The challenges are mostly financial, keeping up with cost of supplies through the increases and labor and still keeping the cost down for the consumer. Covid-19 really challenged all the food industry that we are all in some way still dealing with."

What do you enjoy most about being a small business?

"What I enjoy the most is the customer interactions! Our customers come from all over and they are always happy to see us still here after 35 years of business."

What does it mean to your business to be amplified by the Seahawks?

"We are Seahawks fans, so to be included in this event is amazing! It was a great turn out for Union Gap and the Yakima Valley. We thank you so very much for inviting us to participate in this event. These events are very helpful to small businesses like ours and the community, thank you."

Please tell us anything else you would like us to know.

"We are a small business that has the ability to sell our Tamales Wholesale (USDA inspected). If you know of anyone who can help in distribution, sales or if the stadium is interested in selling them, we are available. As a small business we get overlooked. So if you know someone please don't hesitate to send them our way".

Nereyda Alvarez, owner My Little Restaurant

Tell us what inspired you to start your business.

"My family and my passion for cooking inspired me to launch My Little Restaurant in October 2019. I co-founded and managed a Mexican establishment inside of a gas station just down the street in 2012, and I always wanted to live the American Enterprise dream of owning a restaurant myself someday."

What are some of the challenges or hurdles you had to overcome?

"Our first challenge was our startup phase, which was getting the word out about MLR. We then entered the COVID-19 pandemic, just 5 months after our grand opening, and with the help of my children, we overcame such operational hurdles that would've had us shutdown within our first year. Over time, we got to learn various resources for small businesses, which inspired my son Alex to begin his career in economic development, all while growing our business. Nowadays we face challenges related to inflation on our ingredients, supplies, and overall cost of living."

What do you enjoy most about being a small business?

"I wake up every morning knowing that I'm going to make someone's day with a warm meal. I love serving my customers directly, whether they live in the area or or they're traveling from afar. Real Mexican food, made fresh every day."

What does it mean to your business to be amplified by the Seahawks?

"I have been a big Seahawks fan for over a decade, so for the team to take time out of their busy schedule to be visiting my business means the world to me. Especially since we just celebrated six years in business. Our recent event with the team made the entire experience wholesome, which is a great way to end Hispanic Heritage Month."

Please tell us anything else you would like us to know.

"We thank everyone involved for making the Happy Hour with the Seahawks event happen! Especially to our family, friends, customers, and community members who showed up. We would like to see another event like this occur soon, and it is wonderful that the team is partnering up with the Intentionalist organization to support small businesses, including Latinx-owned and other BIPOC establishments in Eastern Washington."
