Seahawks Do Not Use Franchise Or Transition Tag For 2026

As has usually been the case under John Schneider’s leadership, the Seahawks elected not to use the transition or franchise tag ahead of the start to free agency.

The Seahawks did not use the franchise or transition tag on Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III or any of their other pending free agents prior to Tuesday's deadline to do so ahead of the start of free agency.

That means that nine players—safety Coby Bryant, cornerback Josh Jobe, tackle Josh Jones, outside linebacker Boye Mafe, receiver/return specialist Rashid Shaheed, linebacker Chazz Surratt, Walker, cornerback Riq Woolen and receiver Dareke Young—are set to become unrestricted free agents when the new league year begins on March 11 unless they reach new deals with the Seahawks before then.

Teams can negotiate with their own free agents at any time, then on Monday, starting at 9 a.m., teams are allowed to begin negotiating with all unrestricted free agents. The Seahawks can, and have, re-signed their own players just before the start of free agency, including defensive tackle Leonard Williams in 2024 and linebacker Ernest Jones IV last year.

The Seahawks electing not to tag a player ahead of free agency is hardly a surprise given the team's history under general manager and president of football operations John Schneider. Since Schneider arrived in 2010, the Seahawks have used the franchise tag only twice, tagging kicker Olindo Mare in 2010, and defensive end Frank Clark in 2019. Only Mare played on the tag, while Clark was traded to Kansas City later that spring ahead of the draft.

League-wide, three players were designated franchise players, Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, Cowboys receiver George Pickens and Jets running back Breece Hall, while one player, Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, was designated a transition player.

Take a look at some of the best photos from the 2025 season in which the Seahawks won their second World Championship in franchise history.
