Seahawks 2026 Free Agency Primer

With the new league year approaching, here’s a breakdown of the Seahawks players set to become free agents when the new league year begins on March 11.

The Seahawks won Super Bowl LX last month to cap a dominant season, and as much as everyone involved deserves a chance to celebrate that success, the NFL calendar dictates that there is work to be done.

The NFL's new league year kicks off at 1 p.m. on March 11, marking the official start of free agency—teams can begin negotiating with free agents starting on March 9, but deals can't be signed until the 11th—as well as the date that trades can become official.

A year ago, the Seahawks made several significant moves to kick off the new league year, including trades that sent quarterback Geno Smith to Las Vegas and receiver DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh, and some key free agent signings that helped them win a Super Bowl title, including the addition of quarterback Sam Darnold, outside linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence and receiver Cooper Kupp.

Coming off a Super Bowl win, however, the goal, as general manager and president of football operations John Schneider noted at the NFL Scouting Combine, is to keep as much of the roster intact as possible as opposed to making a bunch of splashy free-agent acquisitions.

"Obviously, want to have everybody back," Scheider said. "When you get done with something special like that, you're like, 'Yeah let's run it back, let's run it back.' You know, it's going to be an interesting process.

"It's going to be a challenge to figure this year's puzzle out. It's a really cool team and they're all special people. We're going to try to retain as many of those guys as we possibly can, as long as we can keep that collective 70 together."

With that goal in mind, we're taking a look at what players are set to become free agents at the start of the new league year if the Seahawks don't sign them to new deals before then.

In all, the Seahawks have nine players set to become unrestricted free agents, including several starters like safety Coby Bryant, cornerback Josh Jobe, running back and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, cornerback Riq Woolen, and other significant contributors like Pro-Bowl returner Rashid Shaheed, outside linebacker Boye Mafe and special teams standouts Chazz Surratt and Dareke Young.

The Seahawks cannot negotiate with outside free agents until the negotiation period begins on March 9, two days ahead of the new league year, but they can work on re-signing their own free agents at any time, and in each of the past two years, they re-signed a top player a day before the start of the new league year, signing defensive lineman Leonard Williams in 2024 and linebacker Ernest Jones IV last year.

For a refresher on the different types of free agents, an unrestricted free agent is a player who has four or more accrued seasons whose contract is expired, and is free to sign with any team once the new league year begins. Restricted free agents, meanwhile, are players who have three or fewer accrued seasons and an expired contract. If teams extend qualifying offers to restricted free agents before the start of the new league year, they can receive draft-pick compensation if a player signs an offer sheet with another team that their current team chooses not to match. The level of compensation depends on the level of RFA tender the team uses.

Finally, exclusive rights free agents are players with two or fewer accrued seasons and an expired contract. If extended a qualifying offer, they can only sign back with the team. The Seahawks already tendered offers to both of this year's exclusive rights free agents, safety Ty Okada and running back George Holani. Restricted and exclusive rights free agents become unrestricted free agents at the start of the new league year if no qualifying offer is made.
