The Seahawks made a change at cornerback a day after establishing an initial 53-man roster, claiming former Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick off waivers.

Veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin was released to make room on the roster.

Kendrick, who won national championships at both Clemson and Georgia, began his college career as a receiver before converting to cornerback, and in addition to his roles as a receiver and corner, he also returned kickoffs during his first two seasons at Clemson. Prior to that, he was a standout quarterback and receiver at South Pointe High School in South Carolina, where he won four consecutive state titles.

Kendrick was a sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2022 and appeared in 15 games as a rookie, making six starts. Kendrick took over a starting role in 2023, starting 12 of 17 games played, then he missed the entire 2024 season due to a torn ACL.

In his two seasons with the Rams, Kendrick recorded 92 tackles, 14 passes defensed, three tackles for loss and one interception, which came in a Rams 2023 win over Seattle.

Griffin, a 2017 third-round pick of the Seahawks, spent his first four seasons in Seattle, earning Pro-Bowl honors in 2019, then signed with Jacksonville as a free agent in 2021. In addition to his time with the Jaguars, Griffin also played for the Texans, Panthers and Vikings over the past two seasons before signing with Seattle as a free agent earlier this offseason.

And while Griffin was released on Wednesday to clear up a roster spot, it sounds like he'll be back with the team soon, perhaps by signing to the practice squad.

"He'll stick around, for sure," general manager and president of football operations John Schneider said after Wednesday's practice. "We love Shaq."
