The Seahawks offseason program will begin on April 20 with the first stages of the voluntary portion workouts, then wrap up with a mandatory minicamp taking place from June 9-11.
In between there will also be Organized Team Activity workouts, or OTAs, on May 26, May 28-29, June 1 and June 3-4. Those dates, as well as the workout dates for the other 31 NFL teams, were announced by the league on Friday. Seattle's offseason dates are similar to those of other teams around the league with the exception of teams that made coaching changes this offseason. Teams with new head coaches are allowed to get a head start on their offseason program, with most of them starting on April 6 or 7.
While the offseason workout program, other than the mandatory June minicamp, is voluntary, the Seahawks had nearly perfect attendance last year, which head coach Mike Macdonald and players said was a big factor in the team's success.
"We would not be here if the guys didn't buy-in the way they did and work the way they did in the offseason," Macdonald said days before his team’s Super Bowl LX victory over the Patriots. "And it's easier said than done. You can ask until your blue in the face for them to come to our offseason program. If you haven't built something out the way that (director of player performance and development) Ivan (Lewis) and (head strength coach) Danny (Van Dijk) and the rest of the guys built out, and our coaches create an environment where they feel like they can come in and get great work in and spend time with their teammates and actually improve as a player, if you're not doing those things to back it up, guys aren't going to want to come. Really, it's the players taking a leap of faith, trusting us and trusting what we've been able to bring to the table for them, and our coaches and staff creating an awesome environment where they feel like they can get better. So, if we didn't do it we would not be here right now. I'm convinced of that."
While the official start date for the Seahawks is April 20, a lot of veteran players won't be asked to show up in person until May in order to allow them more of a break coming off a Super Bowl season.
"It was a shorter offseason, so I just felt like the guys needed a standard amount of time away from the building, so we're kind of tiering it, what we had planned out for them to come back during the offseason," Macdonald said last week at the NFL Annual Meeting. "Guys that didn't really play through that whole playoff push, young guys we're trying to develop or guys that are injured that we're trying to get extra hands on, we'll ask them to come back a little bit earlier, then the other guys will be remote for the first two weeks. Then starting with phase two we're hoping to get everyone back in the building and rolling, then we go from there."
