The series profiles Holmgren's early years playing high school quarterback, to his start as a QB coach with the San Francisco 49ers, showcasing Holmgren's relationship with Joe Montana during the 49ers' 1988 Super-Bowl winning season. 'A Football Life' also delves into the connection Holmgren formed with Steve Young in San Francisco before moving on to head-coaching jobs with the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, where he played a key role in the development of quarterbacks Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck.
