More than 70 players took to the field for Seahawks rookie minicamp. Some of them, Seattle's draft picks, others, signed undrafted free agents and the rest, tryout players, hoping to get an invite back for training camp, or putting their name on coach's radars.
This year's 11 drafted rookies, which includes two defensive players and nine offensive players, are feeling very optimistic about the group they have.
"Everybody came here, we're ready to compete," fifth-round pick WR Tory Horton said. "Ready to work and I feel like we do have one of the best draft classes in this year's draft."
Horton added, "All the guys here are excited. You can tell they love the area, they love the programming, the coaches and the facilities. We're ready to keep getting at it, getting active, getting ready to go win some games."
Mason Richman, Seattle's seventh-round tackle/guard said, "It's a really cool, really, really fun, good draft class to be a part of. A lot of offensive guys, so really excited to be part of this group."
Rookie minicamp is really a learning experience for the new players to prepare for what's to come over the course of the next few weeks, and it's an opportunity for the rookies to get acclimated before they are training with the vets for offseason programming.
"We have a really good group," Elijah Arroyo, second-round pick out of Miami said. "Everybody's coming in here ready to work, ready to compete. The coaches out there, he had to tell us to slow down today. That's how fired up everybody was to be here."
So far, Jalen Milroe likes what he's seen from the offensive group after Day 1.
"It's so exciting. Especially having practice today. We have some talent on offense and it showed today," Milroe said. "We have really, really good dudes in each room. A lot of talent, a lot of guys that love football, that care. It's funny seeing how much everybody loves football. [Everyone was] communicating before we even had practice, doing walk through, doing install, preaching the reads, what's my footwork, talking to those different guys, because they care. They want to know how they can be their best at their particular position. It's definitely cool just to see the amount of talent we have in our draft class."
During practice, Arroyo and Milroe got somewhat of a feel for what it will be like working with each other this season.
"I threw him some nice balls today and he went to go get that ball and I was happy," Milroe said. "Me and him went on a couple visits together, we communicated, we just talked about how great it would be if we were teammates and I remember getting a text from him saying, 'Man, we're going to be teammates'."
"It was great," Arroyo said. "I love Jalen. I love the way he plays, and I feel like we're going to have a good connection moving forward."
Adding he likes the way, "he throws the ball, the way he moves, he has a chance to be an elite quarterback at the highest level."
On the defensive side of the ball, Seattle's second-round pick Nick Emmanwori came to his press conference wearing his now No. 3 jersey.
"I kind of was looking for a single digit," Emmanwori said on choosing a jersey number. "Seven wasn't available (Uchenna Nwosu's jersey number), so I was looking at the next number that could mean something to me. Russell Wilson was one of my favorite quarterbacks growing up with that Legion of Boom defense, had an offense too, so respect to Russell. He did a lot for this organization, did everything he could, so I'm going to do what I can in this number and make it special on defense in my own way."
Emmanwori started the process of making it special where he was working on his leadership skills and making an impact.
"Coming in, I just want to be a better leader. At South Carolina, especially my last year, we had a great defense, so I want to bring that feeling back, bring it up to Seattle, even though I'm a rookie, even when the vets come back. So just trying to get used to that leadership, talking to guys letting guys know what we're doing, camaraderie."
Fifth-round pick Rylie Mills said, "I think everyone's still meeting each other but its been cool just getting to meet this class and a lot of really good guys."
