Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald gave a positive update on quarterback Sam Darnold following Wednesday night's win over the Patriots.

The Seahawks lost Darnold to a hip injury early in Wednesday night's game, darkening the mood in the team's season opener against the Patriots.

Seattle was able to rally behind a great defensive performance and a strong showing by backup quarterback Drew Lock, earning a 13-10 victory to start the season. Not long after Seahawks players celebrated the dramatic victory, Macdonald provided even more good news when he gave an update on his starting quarterback.

"With Sam, we got some great news back," Macdonald said after the win. "Let's just say it's good news right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam; we love him, and the guys really pulled through for him."

Darnold was sacked on third down to end Seattle's first possession of the game, then limped off the field before being taken into the blue medical tent for evaluation. Not long after, Darnold limped to the locker room with a team physician, and before the first half was over, he had been ruled out of the game.

Fortunately for Darnold and the Seahawks, however, X-rays showed that Darnold did not fracture his hip. More tests are to come, but eliminating that concern was encouraging for the Seahawks.

"At this point we were able to rule out a fracture," Macdonald said. "There's some more tests to be done, so that's what I'm saying when it's positive. We're still working through all of that, but right now, fracture is out, which is great news."

Macdonald said it is too soon to know Darnold's prognosis for Seattle's Week 2 game in Arizona.

"I really don't know," Macdonald said. "I don't know what the extent is."
