Friday Round-Up: Seahawks Legend Walter Jones Commemorates Cortez Kennedy With '96 CHECK' Initiative

Seahawks Legend Walter Jones encourages all to check on their friends and family, just as Cortez Kennedy used to do.

Good morning, 12s.

Here's a look at what's 'out there' for today – Friday, September 6 – about your Seattle Seahawks:

Call A Friend For #96Check

Out of the blue, the phone rings.

You pick up, and on the other line, a voice calmly asks, "Hey friend, how are you doing?"

That's it. It's really as simple as that. These are the phone calls that Seahawks Legend Walter Jones used to get out of nowhere from Legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Cortez Kennedy.

To honor Kennedy, the fellow Hall of Famer started an initiative in 2017 using the hashtag #96Check. Its purpose is to check in on your friends and family to stay connected with one another. Leading up to September 6 (9.6), Jones has been tweeting out notes on social media to raise awareness for #96Check.

In a segment on NFL Network two years ago, Jones explained, "When the passing of 'Tez happened, you get a call from a lot of people, but then you'll get that one call from someone that's just asking you how you're doing, and sometimes that can help you get through it." The Ring of Honor member continues, "So for me, that's why I wanted to start this, to think about those players that weren't the Hall of Famers, the All-Pros, but those guys that went to battle with you, that you made friends with. Everybody on the team from the first man to the 53rd man, that guy was a part of the team, so you don't want to forget those guys."

Unique to this year's celebration of 'Tez, NFL Films posted a feature piece elaborating on the initiative and Kennedy's story. Jones took to Twitter to express his appreciation for the League's support.

We encourage you to pick up the phone today and call several friends and family members.
