News, notes and observations from the 12th practice of Seahawks training camp.
The Seahawks were back on the field Tuesday as they continue to prepare for their preseason opener against the Raiders, and back on the field leading his team was head coach Mike Macdonald, who missed Monday's practice due to a personal matter.
Macdonald said he was with his family Monday and added, "Everything's positive, everything went great, and just very blessed. All positive, people have big problems out there; I don't."
Here are six observations from Tuesday's practice:
1. Completing a deep ball on Riq Woolen is a tough task.
When Macdonald was asked about fourth-year cornerback Riq Woolen, he responded that Woolen is "having a great camp," and that was particularly evident on Tuesday. Woolen was tested deep on three different occasions, twice by Sam Darnold trying to find Jaxon Smith-Njigba down the left sideline, and once on a deep ball to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and all three times, the ball fell harmlessly to the turf. Both balls to Smith-Njigba were well thrown, but Woolen's rare combination of length and speed left no real window to find the elusive receiver. On the deep shot to Valdes-Scantling, there was some jostling to the point that Woolen was asking for a flag for offensive pass interference.
2. Kenneth Walker III was back and looking great.
Kenneth Walker III was held out of Saturday's practice due to what Macdonald described as a sore foot, then was also out on Monday, but there shouldn't be too much concern about the running back after the way he ran on Tuesday upon his return to practice. Walker was back in uniform Tuesday, and on one of his first carries in the team portion of practice, he bounced outside to his left with a decisive cut, then exploded up field for a big gain.
3. For the second day in a row, a Sam Darnold red zone pass was a highlight of the day.
Late in Monday's practice, Darnold made a nice throw rolling to his left to connect with Cooper Kupp for a touchdown that also featured some nifty footwork from Kupp to secure the completion. A day later, Smith-Njigba turned in an even better catch on another nice red-zone throw from Darnold, going to the ground to catch a pass at the front pylon after Darnold threaded a pass out of the reach of Josh Jobe, who had good coverage on the play.
4. An impressive pass breakup from Jobe.
While a good throw and catch beat good coverage on the aforementioned play, Jobe turned in a nice play earlier in practice when he ripped a pass out of the hands of Kupp to take away a completion. With the team practicing fourth-down situations, Darnold hit Kupp with an accurate pass on the sideline just past the first-down marker, but as Kupp tried to pull the ball in to secure the catch, Jobe got one hand between Kupp's and on the ball, and ripped the ball loose as both went out of bounds.
5. MVS showed off his speed.
One of the stories of the last week in Seahawks camp has been the development of rookie receiver Tory Horton, who looks to be pushing for a significant role in the offense. Horton's assent means Valdes-Scantling is competing for his opportunity, and as Macdonald noted Tuesday, the veteran receiver is handling it well.
"He knows he's in a battle," Macdonald said. "I think he respects Tory, what he's doing, and he has a great attitude, he's had a tremendous attitude. He's a competitor at heart."
And on Tuesday Valdes-Scantling helped himself in that competition with a nice catch and run that showed off the speed that helped him average 22.6 yards per catch in his eight games with the Saints last season playing in Klint Kubiak's offense. Taking what looked like a simple short pass over the middle from Drew Lock, Valdes-Scantling turned up field and raced past the secondary for a touchdown.
"He's doing a good job," Macdonald said of Valdes-Scantling's camp. "The things that he does, I think are going to show up more when we're live—being able to separate the defense, getting into that third level to open up some of those intermediate routes, and if they don't respect what he can do, you saw last year what he can do."
6. A Hall of Fame visitor at practice.
Tuesday's practice featured some closing words to the team from Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, who also made a visit last year. Dungy is close with Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, and is a coach who Macdonald has referred to as one of his coaching heroes.
"It was great," Macdonald said. "Coach Dungy is probably the reason that I decided to pursue coaching in the first place, he was definitely a driving force behind that. I have so much respect for him, and the guys know, like, hey, 'Coach Dungy's the man.' Awesome to have him here, appreciate the word that he gave the team—I'll leave that between us—but great having him here. I know he's really tight with coach (Leslie) Frazier, so excited to see them share old stories."
