NASHVILLE—The Seahawks started off fast, jumping to a 16-3 lead despite the Titans playing their starters while the Seahawks rested theirs, but turnovers and a lackluster second half allowed the Titans to claw their way back in the game before taking the lead with their first touchdown of the game coming late in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks had two more possessions with a chance to retake the lead, but weren't able to capitalize on those chances, the result being a 19-16 Titans victory.
Here are seven rapid reaction to Sunday night's game at Nissan Stadium:
- The Seahawks started off great but couldn't keep that momentum.
While the Seahawks elected to rest their starters, as well as some key backups, the Titans used their starters on both sides of the ball through the first quarter and, on offense at least, in the start of the second quarter.
Even with their starters watching from the sideline, the Seahawks were able to jump to a big lead early, with the Drew Lock-led offense moving the ball efficiently, and with the defense flying around and bringing the type of big hits, gang tackling and energy Mike Macdonald was sure to like relative to last week's game.
After one quarter, the Seahawks led 16-3 while gaining 159 yards and seven first downs compared to 83 and three for Tennessee. The Seahawks also averaged 11.4 yards per play in the first quarter while limiting the Titans to 5.5.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks, they weren't able to keep it up through the second half, and were in fact shut out for the final three quarters while the Titans were able to fight their way back into it, first with four field goals then eventually a touchdown to take the lead late in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game winner.
Among the issues that kept the Seahawks from putting the game away after building that big lead were too many penalties—the Seahawks had 14 for 129 yards—a pair of second-half interceptions thrown by Jalen Milroe, and a couple of costly special teams miscues, including a muffed punt by Cody White that led to a field goal, and a missed extra point and missed field goal by Jason Myers.
2. Drew Lock was sharp in his one half of action.
Getting the start for the second straight week with Sam Darnold again getting the night off, Drew Lock was sharp out of the gate to help the Seahawks build an early lead. With Seattle's No. 2 offense going against Tennessee's starting defense, Lock completed his first 10 pass attempts, including a 36-yard touchdown to Elijah Arroyo, and he also had a key scramble for a first down on third-and-9.
Lock played the first half before giving way to Jalen Milroe, completing 12 of 14 passes for 103 yards, one touchdown and a 121.1 passer rating.
3. Jacardia Wright showed off some big-play ability.
Jacardia Wright, who signed with the Seahawks last offseason, was a preseason standout as a rookie, and eventually ended up on Seattle's practice squad. Wright missed this year's preseason opener due to injury, but was back in action on Sunday and, as he did last year, showed off some serious playmaking ability.
Most notably, Wright took advantage of a very well-blocked run play, bursting through a hole in Tennessee's starting defense, then showing off good finishing speed on his way to a 69-yard touchdown run. That play accounted for the bulk of Wright's team-leading 81 rushing yards on eight carries, and he also added 12 yards on three receptions.
4. Elijah Arroyo continues to stand out in the passing game.
Second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo has been a standout throughout training camp this summer, and he carried that into Sunday's game in his limited playing time in the first half. Arroyo helped the Seahawks move the chains on third down in the first quarter, gaining 14 yards on a pass from Drew Lock, then on the very next play, Arroyo took advantage of a coverage bust to get wide open down the seam, with Lock hitting him for a 36-yard touchdown.
5. Connor O'Toole and the pass-rush depth showed up this week.
The Seahawks did not record a sack in their preseason opening loss to Dallas, and while it's hard to get overly concerned about anything that happens in a game in which all the starters didn't play, the Seahawks would still like to see some of their young defensive players step up.
On Sunday, the defense was better overall and that included a pass rush that produced three sacks, one of which forced a fumble, as well as several other impactful pressures. Second-year outside linebacker Connor O'Toole led the way with 1.5 sacks, sharing one with outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff after they did well to collapse the pocket from both sides before meeting at the quarterback. Chazz Surratt, who had a few big plays, including a key third-and-2 stop on a short completion, showed a ton of hustle on his sack, chasing down Cam Ward before knocking the ball loose with a diving effort. Unfortunately for the Seahawks the ball went out of bounds so the Titans retained possession, but it was an impressive effort, nonetheless. O'Toole later added a tackle for loss on a third-down run attempt, forcing the Titans to settle for a field goal.
Among the other pressures was one by nose tackle Brandon Pili that drew a holding call, a flag that took at Titans touchdown off the board.
6. Mike Macdonald got the celebration penalty he was looking for out of his team last week.
Last year, the Seahawks earned two celebration penalties when players not suited up for the game ran onto the field to celebrate interceptions by teammates Josh Jobe and Nehemiah Pritchett. Obviously in a regular-season game, 15-yard penalties can be critical mistakes, but given the nature of the penalty—starters not playing celebrating their teammates—and the lack of real stakes in the game, Macdonald enjoyed those penalties at the time. Last week, Macdonald even lamented the lack of celebration penalties by his team, admitting he kind of wanted to see it happen again.
Well, if it was a celebration penalty Macdonald wanted, he got it on Sunday night, with several players running to the end zone to celebrate Wright's 69-yard touchdown run, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The 15-yarder did contribute to a missed extra point, but again, it's the preseason and Macdonald was no doubt happy to see his players celebrate together.
7. The game was marred by a serious looking injury to rookie safety Bud Clark.
While there was a lot to like about Sunday night's performance, there was also a big negative coming out of the game, a leg injury suffered by rookie safety Bud Clark on Seattle's first defensive play of the night. Clark and teammates immediately signaled for help after he went down, and after being tended to by athletic trainers and team physicians on the field, Clark had an air cast placed on his leg and was carted off the field.
The Seahawks already lost receiver Jake Bobo for the season on this trip to Nashville, with Bobo injuring his knee in Friday's joint practice, an injury that led to him being placed on injured reserve a day later.
