GREEN BAY, Wis.—The Seahawks lost their preseason finale on Saturday, falling 20-7 to the Green Bay Packers, but that final score did not tell the story of the team's trip, which began with a Wednesday flight ahead of a joint practice on Thursday.
Between the lengthy, physical practice the Seahawks had with the Packers and the team bonding that comes with a longer road trip, including a team and staff dinner on Thursday night, the Seahawks felt like they got a lot out of the week even though it didn't include a victory
"It was a great week for our football team, our organization," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. "It's not easy to pull these things off, to move your organization across the country. Us being in Seattle and have to get out here to Green Bay, it's a big to-do, so I appreciate our organization, especially Jody (Allen), John (Schneider) and Chuck (Arnold), just making it happen and understanding how important it is for us. It was great, it was great for our team. I feel like we got a lot better and got a great evaluation for our players as well."
While the Seahawks weren't able to translate a productive week into a positive result on Saturday, falling behind early thanks in part to three first-half turnovers, Macdonald appreciated the effort he saw from his team in a game where starters got the day off.
"I thought the guys played hard today," Macdonald said. "There's a lot of good, and there's a lot we're going to learn from. There's operation stuff, there's penalties, making quick decisions, being decisive, playing our style of ball, that we'll learn from these things. But I thought the guys played really hard and they put a heck of a training camp together, so they should be proud of themselves."
Asked again about the week, Macdonald said, "We didn't win the game. Look, we got the whole practice in. I know we had the scuffles there, so to be able to come back and get the whole practice in was really important. It was a longer joint practice than you normally have. Normally these things are a little bit quicker; we ended up with a ton of plays, so it was just great all around-- evaluating. Understanding where we can step on the gas systemically, kind of declares who can do what and who we are going to be. So a lot of positives. We spent time with them. We had a team dinner. Just anytime you get a chance to get away—it was time for us to get out of Seattle, so it was a great opportunity for us."
