GREEN BAY, Wis.—With what was probably the play of the game, and maybe the play of the preseason, Seahawks safety Ty Okada said he walked away from Saturday's game feeling, "very confident in my ability and what I was able to show the team and coaches."
During the first drive of the game, on a Green Bay third-and-five, Okada had already sniffed out what Packers quarterback Malik Willis had up his sleeve.
"I saw him kind of staring that seam down a little bit," Okada said. "So I was just waiting for his back foot to hit and once that hit, I was able to commit to making that break."
After making the break, Okada was able to making a leaping one-handed interception.
"Shout out to my teammates. Pat [O'Connell], specifically for getting some elevation on that ball. Helped create an overthrow. Then once I saw it in the air, I was just thinking, 'Man, I can get to this ball, and if I can just get a hand on it and see what happens from there. That's what I'm going to do.' So laid out, timed it up well with it hitting my hand and was able to scoop underneath it and get the pick. So I was thankful that Pat got that elevated and I was able to come away with it."
After getting the pick, Okada made it to his feet and returned the ball 23 yards before being tackled.
"It would have been better if I would have scored," he said. "But yeah, I would say that that was definitely [my] best interception."
On the play coach Mike Macdonald said, "That was a heck of a play. It was awesome. Going from the deep half, guy throws the ball on the middle read. To be able to overlap in that area of the field and make one. It's just a great play all around. Great team defense on that play with the rush, coverage complimenting each other, but ultimately that was a phenomenal play."
Okada has been a practice squad guy for Seattle in 2023 and 2024, appearing in four regular season games in 2024, mostly on special teams. Through the preseason so far, Okada has made a few tackles in each preseason game, including four today, along with the interception and a pass defensed.
"I'm very happy with it and I'm very confident in my ability and what I was able to show the team and coaches," Okada said on his training camp and preseason. "I'm going to be reliable, dependable. I'm going to be in the right spots, make those plays I'm supposed to make. It's been just an awesome journey getting to build great relationships with amazing guys in the locker room. I'm just really thankful for this experience and we'll see where the chips fall."
