Opening Statement
"Really proud of our guys today. They went out there and competed and brought great energy. I think it always starts there, and I thought our effort was pretty consistent for four quarters. Now, obviously, a lot of decisions need to be made. This is always kind of a bittersweet time in terms of, you know, you got to say goodbye to a lot of guys that have busted their butt for months and months and years. I definitely appreciate that locker room. I think we have a great group of guys, and we'll be excited for the guys that make it, and certainly, it's always disappointing for those that don't."
On the satisfaction of today's performance and whether it was good to see
"Yeah, I thought so. You know, going into this, you're always a little nervous when you're playing some of your starters, too. I thought defensively, we had a pretty good performance, and offensively, I mean, we had that 16-play drive or whatever it was. I was pretty pleased, and I'm glad we did it. Hindsight is always 20/20, but I just thought, in my gut, I feel like a lot of years we come out of the preseason saying, 'I wish we would have given these guys a few more reps.' We were able to do that for most of our guys today. Certainly, we had a lot of guys down, as well, so that's always a challenge, but I was proud of those guys, you know, just suiting up and going to play ball."
On QB Malik Willis' running during the game versus in practice
"I thought it was great. Practice is always a tough thing to judge, you know. It's not live and you're not going to the ground. Certainly, that's one of his (Malik Willis) superpowers, the ability to get out of the pocket and create off-schedule or scramble and create big plays. He was able to extend that second drive a few times with picking up first downs with his legs."
On the defense's forced-fumble emphasis showing up in the game
"That was exciting because it finally happened. There was a couple other opportunities I didn't think we took advantage of, but you know, that is always at the forefront of our guys' minds. It's drilled into their head, I would say, every day, and we drill it every day out on the practice fields. So, for those guys to make it come to fruition is exciting to see."
On QB Malik Willis' value to the team and feeling confident in him as backup QB
"We've got a lot of confidence in Malik (Willis). I think he is just scratching the surface of what he can become. Just the dual- threat that he is as a quarterback, I think it's problematic for most defenses, and I think he's really come a long way in terms of the fundamentals of the position and just making good decisions."
On alternating QB Sean Clifford and QB Taylor Elgersma at quarterback during the game
"You know, we gave Sean (Clifford) game one, and he was the first guy in. Taylor (Elgersma) was in game two. Just kind of thought that, number one, it keeps them both in it for the entire game, so I thought that was important. I thought those guys did a good job."
On Elgersma's improvisational plays
"I mean, shoot, you have to find a way. There was two of those that he (Taylor Elgersma) did. I have to go back and look at it, but I thought for the most part he did a pretty good job."
On roster decisions approaching and how much the team factors in the number of players at each position versus the best 53 overall
"I think you always have to take into account the numbers at positions."
On how many roster decisions "make themselves" versus how much deliberation takes place
"I've spent a lot of time with Gutey (Brian Gutekunst), and for the most part you get a pretty good idea of where it's going. But, certainly there's going to be other teams where guys get released, and there's going to be opportunitiesthere that potentially could impact some of the decisions that you make in terms of who you keep from your roster."
On the plan for practice next week
"The plan right now, depending upon how we are health-wise, would be tomorrow we'll treat kind of as an in-season Monday. We'll come in, we'll review the team meeting, we'll have a workout. And then, Monday is an in-season Tuesday. Then Tuesday, obviously that's the cutdown day. I'd like to get these guys – hopefully Jordan (Love) is able to take some snaps. If that's the case, I'd like to get them work on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and really take advantage of that time."
On the timeout taken a few plays before WR Will Sheppard's touchdown reception
"I was watching the play clock, and it was hitting zero as I called the timeout. The quarterback's got to be responsible for that, but I mean, sometimes you got to bail them out."
On CB Kamal Hadden and DE Deslin Alexandre's development
"I thought both those guys really played really well. Kamal (Hadden) was sticky in coverage. He had to had at least three PBUs (pass break ups) that I saw, so that was exciting. He's got the talent; it's just the consistency of which you play. That was exciting to see him in a game environment, go out there and do that. And Des (Deslin Alexandre), I mean you can always count on Des. He's going to give 110% every chance, every opportunity he gets, and it was cool tosee him make some plays, not only on defense, but on special teams as well."
On LB Ty'Ron Hopper's performance
"Hopper I would say, he is one of our most improved players, I think from a year ago. I think he's done an outstanding job. He's done a much better job communicating I would say. He's the voice of the defense when he's in there and so I think he's done a really nice job and he's still a young, developing player. But he had a lot of good work this preseason."
On if P Daniel Whelan has taken his directional part of the punting game further
"I would say it was pretty impressive, what he's able to do, it's definitely a good thing to have somebody that's capable of flipping the field. As we know, field position plays a large part in determining the outcomes of games, he is a weapon. But I still, if we're doing it right, you only use him to go out there and hold, and he's a hell of a holder."
On where WR Matthew Golden can help in the regular season
"I think he (Matthew Golden) has done a nice job. I think he can help us in any capacity that we need him to and I think he's a guy that, he just works the right way. He comes in with the right mentality, the right attitude and he just comes to work."
On if the tension of Thursday's practice carried over to today's game
"Nah, I don't think so. I don't know if you guys felt differently, but I didn't see anything that was, I thought our guys just competed."
On if there was an emphasis on playing cleaner this week
"Yeah."
On if there was a teachable moment with T Anthony Belton this week
"Yeah. I was just trying to, I mean, he's a young player and it was third and a mile and you always want to take those opportunities, those moments that come up. For a lot of these guys, you've got to play with the game within the game. We called a run in that situation, and I don't know what it was, it was like third and like thirty it felt like, and he was in a three-point stance, and I'm like, 'Be in a two-point stance.' You know, make the defense think we're going to pass the ball and then you try to slip a run in there, and you know and get in better field goal position. I think it was one of those teachable moments and something that he'll be a little bit more aware forever in that situation again. Hopefully, we're not. But odds are, at some point, we will be."
On if the referees or coaches pulled T Zach Tom due to the scrap at practice on Thursday
"No. The refs really don't have, I wish the league would give the refs the same control that they have, you know have in the games. But that's just our rule. If you throw a punch, and listen, he (Zach Tom) was not the only person at fault. He was the only guy I saw. And then you go back, and you watch it and you're like, 'Oh, there was a lot of guys that should have gotten tossed that didn't' and that's just the way it works sometimes."
