Five years ago, when the world was shut down by a pandemic and the NFL offseason was particularly quiet, we decided here at Seahawks.com to undertake the fun but rather unimportant task of choosing the best player in team history to wear every jersey number. And now, with the Seahawks celebrating their 50th season in franchise history, we've decided to refresh that list. Most of the numbers haven't changed, but several have with players like Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith Njigba, DK Metcalf, Geno Smith and Quandre Diggs replacing Seahawks Legends who were on the list five years earlier.
Earlier this offseason, the Seahawks named the Top 50 Players in franchise history, and as one might expect, those players all made this list as well, with the exception of a couple of number that were worn by multiple Top 50 players like 72 (Joe Nash and Michael Bennett) and 89 (Doug Baldwin and Brian Blades).
To kick things off, here is the far-from-definitive definitive list of the best Seahawks players from 1-20. Check back Tuesday for numbers 21-40.
1: QB Warren Moon, 1997-1998
Moon built much of his Hall of Fame resume with the Houston Oilers, but he was still pretty darn good in his short stint with the Seahawks, making the Pro Bowl as a 41-year-old when he threw for 3,678 yards and 25 touchdowns in 1997. Also worth a mention is kicker Efren Herrera, who became something of a cult hero due to the trick plays the Jack Patera-era teams were known to run.
2: K Todd Peterson, 1995-1999
Seattle's kicker from 1995-1999, Peterson made 81.8 percent of his field goals and every extra point in five seasons with the Seahawks, and was also the team's nominee for the NFL's Man of the Year Award (since named for Walter Payton) in 1996.
3: QB Russell Wilson, 2012-2021
Wilson earned Pro-Bowl honors nine times in his 10 seasons while rewriting the Seahawks record books. In addition to his on-field accomplishments, which included helping the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title and eight postseason berths, Wilson also became in 2020 the second player in team history, along with Steve Largent, to win the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
4: P Michael Dickson, 2018-present
2020 pick: K Stephen Hauschka
One of the best punters of his era, Dickson was included on the Seahawks Top 50 Players list for a career that has seen him earn first-team All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors as a rookie, and go on to average 48.2 yards per punt, the third best average in league history, and 42.9 net yards per punt, a franchise record.
5: K Jason Myers, 2019-present
2020 pick: P Ruben Rodriguez
One of the league's most accurate kickers, especially from long range, Myers has made a franchise-record 26 field goals from 50-plus yards in his six seasons in Seattle, including a franchise-best nine in 2024 on 12 attempts. Myers, a Pro-Bowl selection in 2022, also went a perfect 24 for 24 on field goal attempts in 2020, including a franchise-record 61-yard kick.
6: S Quandre Diggs, 2019-2023
2020 pick: QB Charlie Whitehurst
The Seahawks didn't have a rich history at No. 6 before Diggs changed his number in 2021, making him the clear pick here. Acquired in a midseason trade in 2019, Diggs became a standout in Seattle's secondary, earning Pro-Bowl honors three straight years from 2020-2022, and dating back to his time in Detroit, Diggs went six straight seasons with three or more interceptions from 2017-2022, making him the first safety to accomplish that since Ed Reed.

7: QB Geno Smith, 2014-2024
2020 pick: QB Jon Kitna
Smith began his Seahawks career as Russell Wilson's backup, a job he would hold for three seasons before getting a chance to compete for the starting job after Wilson was traded in 2022. Smith not only won the job, he thrived in his first opportunity as a starter since 2014, earning Pro-Bowl and AP Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2022. Smith earned a second Pro-Bowl selection in 2023, then in 2024 he set single-season franchise records for completions, attempts and passing yards.
8: QB Matt Hasselbeck, 2001-2010
Acquired in a trade with Green Bay, Hasselbeck went on to become one of the best quarterbacks in franchise history and an eventual Ring of Honor and Top 50 Players selection. A three-time Pro-Bowler, Hasselbeck led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl in 2005, and played a key role in the Seahawks making the playoffs for five straight years from 2003-2007 under Mike Holmgren, then again in 2010 under first-year head coach Pete Carroll.
9: P Jon Ryan, 2008-2017
A good argument can also be made for kicker Norm Johnson, who was an All-Pro in 1984, but Ryan just edges out Johnson, not just for his 10-year Seahawks career as a darn good punter, but because without his touchdown pass Garry Gilliam in the NFC championship game, the Seahawks very well might not have joined the Patriots as one of two teams to play in back-to-back Super Bowl this century. A beloved member of two Super Bowl teams, Ryan was also selected to the Seahawks Top 50 Players list.
10: QB Jim Zorn, 1976-1984
Another easy choice, Zorn was Seattle's first starting quarterback and earned second-team All-Pro honors in 1978. A member of the Seahawks Ring of Honor, Zorn, along with Steve Largent, helped lead the Seahawks to their first winning seasons while also boasting a Top 8 scoring offense for three straight seasons from 1977-1979.
11: WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 2023-present
2020 pick: WR Deon Butler
A first-round pick and the first receiver selected in the 2023 draft, Smith-Njigba followed up a solid rookie campaign with a breakout 2024 season that saw him earn Pro-Bowl honors after matching Tyler Lockett's franchise record with 100 receptions. Smith-Njigba's 1,130 yards led the team in 2024, and helped him become the eighth player in NFL history with at least 150 receptions, 1,700 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns before his 23rdbirthday.
12: QB Sam Adkins, 1977-1981
Zorn's backup for four seasons, Adkins is better known by most for his work in broadcasting after his playing career, but he's the choice here because, well, he's the only player in team history to wear No. 12, which was retired in 1984 in honor of the NFL's loudest fans. Technically, Jim Zorn also wore No. 12 very briefly in 1979, borrowing Adkins' jersey for part of a game after his No. 10 jersey was ripped.
13: LB Ernest Jones IV, 2024-present
2020 pick: WR Chris Matthews
Jones being the pick after just half a season in Seattle is a sign that, no, the Seahawks don't have much history at that number, but it's also a sign of how significant his contributions to the defense were in his first season with the team. While there were other factors involved, Jones had a big role in Seattle's defensive turnaround that occurred midway through the season, with the Seahawks finishing the season with one of the league's top defenses over the final eight games of the season, a stretch that saw them win six of those eight. Signing Jones to a contract extension was one of the team's biggest moves in the 2025 offseason.
14: WR DK Metcalf, 2019-2024
2020 pick: P Rick Tuten
A second-round pick in 2019, Metcalf quickly became one of the most productive receivers in team history. After a strong rookie campaign in which he recorded 900 yards and seven touchdowns on 58 catches, Metcalf set a franchise record the following year with 1,303 receiving yards. A two-time Pro-Bowl selection and one-time second-team All-Pro, Metcalf joined Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss as one of two players in league history to have at least 50 receptions, 900 yards and five receiving touchdowns in each of his first six seasons. Metcalf was also named to the Seahawks Top 50 Players.
15: WR Jermaine Kearse, 2012-2016
The ultimate local-kid-makes-good story, Kearse went from Lakes High to the University of Washington to the player responsible for some of the biggest catches in Seahawks history, including the go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown in the NFC Championship game to send the Seahawks to Super Bowl XLVIII, and the walk-off touchdown in overtime a year later to send the Seahawks to Super Bowl XLIX. His spectacular juggling catch late in that second Super Bowl would have gone down as one of the greatest in league history had the Seahawks been able to finish that drive to secure a second title.
16: WR Tyler Lockett, 2015-2024
Lockett began his career as an All-Pro returner, and went on to become one of the best receivers in franchise history and a player who was named to the Seahawks Top 50 Players. In 10 seasons with the Seahawks, Lockett totaled 661 receptions for 8,594 yards and 61 receiving touchdowns, all of which rank second in franchise history behind Hall of Famer Steve Largent. Lockett and Largent, who have the same birthday were both born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, are the only two players in team history to record four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, with Lockett doing it from 2019-2022, a stretch that included a franchise record-setting 100 receptions in 2020 (Jaxon Smith-Njigba has since tied that record). The year before that streak of 1,000-yard seasons started, Russell Wilson had a perfect passer rating while targeting Lockett for the entire 2018 season, with Lockett catching 57 passes for 965 yards and 10 scores.
17: QB Dave Krieg, 1980-1991
Another member of the Seahawks Ring of Honor and the Seahawks Top 50 Players, Krieg helped lead the Seahawks to their first postseason berth and to four playoff appearances in six years from 1983 to 1988. A three-time Pro-Bowl selection, Krieg finished his Seahawks career holding nearly every franchise passing record, though those were later broken by Matt Hasselbeck and Russell Wilson.
18: WR Sidney Rice, 2011-2013
One of the first big free-agent signings under Pete Carroll and John Schneider, Rice was a significant part of Seattle's offense for two-plus seasons before injuries took their toll, including a 2012 season in which he was one of the top targets for a rookie Russell Wilson, catching 50 passes for 748 yards and seven touchdowns.
19: WR Jake Bobo, 2023-present
2020 pick: WR Bryan Walters
A 2023 undrafted free agent, Bobo became a fan favorite (#MoreBobo) in the preseason who not only made the 53-man roster, but who also proved to be a valuable contributor on special teams and on offense, catching 19 passes for 196 yards and two scores as a rookie.
20: S Julian Love, 2023-present
2020 pick: CB Terry Taylor
While Taylor had a longer career in Seattle than Love, so far, Love gets the nod here thanks to being a Pro-Bowl selection in 2023, and a key leader who helped bridge the transition from Pete Carroll to Mike Macdonald. In two seasons with the Seahawks, Love has appeared in all 34 games, recording 232 tackles, seven interceptions, 22 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four tackles for loss.
