The Seahawks established their initial 53-man roster with a series of roster moves on Sunday, including a trade with the Chargers to acquire cornerback Avery Smith, an undrafted rookie out of Toledo who was a standout this preseason.

The moves included releasing several veterans who are not subject to waivers, meaning if the Seahawks and those players are both amenable to it, they can come back and sign to the practice squad Monday without having to clear waivers. Among those veterans who were waived who were playing in significant roles or competing for them were cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Noah Igbinoghene, safeties D'Anthony Bell and Rodney Thomas II and receiver Cody White.

The Seahawks' initial 53-man roster includes three of their eight draft picks, running back Jadarian Price, cornerback Julian Neal and guard Beau Stephens, while one, safety Bud Clark, is on injured reserve, and four other, receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr., cornerbacks Andre Fuller and Michael Dansby, and defensive tackle Deven Eastern, were waived.

No undrafted rookies made the initial roster aside from the just-acquired Avery Smith, but a few from last year's rookie class did, including outside linebacker Connor O'Toole and tight end Nick Kallerup, who were both on the team last season, as well as receiver Montorie Foster Jr., earned his spot with a standout preseason and training camp. Foster, who after getting hurt in camp last season as a rookie, was substitute teaching and worked to get his real estate license back home in Ohio before he signed to Seattle's practice squad late in the season.

In an expected move, running back Zach Charbonnet will open the season on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Additionally, cornerback Terrion Arnold was placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List after signing Saturday.
