Seattle's Defense Knows It 'Has Got To Play Better' After Loss To 49ers

The Seahawks again struggled against the run and explosive plays in their 36-24 loss on Thursday Night Football.

On Thursday night, Seattle gave up 16 first-half points to their division rival in a prime-time matchup, while only putting up a field goal before heading to the locker room.

"I feel like after halftime, the team transitioned and gave ourselves a chance in the second half," linebacker Derick Hall said.

The Seahawks did come out of the locker room with more momentum, behind Laviska Shenault Jr.'s 97-yard kickoff return, and a 13-play, 94-yard drive that ended with a Kenneth Walker III one-yard touchdown run.

"I think we did fairly decent," Rayshawn Jenkins said. "Besides the two long runs. And it just really comes down to the plan at the end of the day. Just discipline and run fits and knowing what you need to do and having your eyes right."

Seahawks safety Julian Love said the issues the defense are dealing with aren't because of scheme but it comes down to fundamentals.

"I think it's just fundamental stuff," he said. "We have to keep it black and white in the meeting room, and address what needs to be addressed in terms of simple stuff. And that's the good part, that's the promising part is that it is bread and butter things that we're not executing on. Mike's really dialing it up, or trying to dial it up, and we just have to find a way to mesh and catch our flow."

Jenkins adding the problems are, "Very fixable. Everyone just has to be open. I think we got the right guys. I think that is the case. But we just have to really hold each other accountable, and we can't beat around the bush."

After allowing 175 rushing yards to the Giants on Sunday, Seattle allowed 228 yards on Thursday.

"That's something we've been dealing with for the last few games," Leonard Williams said. "As a defensive lineman and whoever plays in the front seven, that's something we should pride ourselves on. To allow this to continue to happen is not good for our defense, good for our team. And we obviously have to figure it out before we get to where we want to be as a team. I think a part of it is we just have to figure out how to just do our job, keep it simple and stop thinking about doing someone else's job. I think that's what happens sometimes in these big runs or explosive plays."

Along with stopping the run, the defense knows they also need to get takeaways and communicate more effectively.

Devon Witherspoon said "The defense has got to play better, we've got to create more takeaways. So that's been a common theme."

With Williams adding, "In a defense like this, you have to have as much communication as possible. It's like obnoxious communication."

But despite all of that, they know that the issues they're seeing are fixable and feel confident in the team bouncing back.

"I feel real confident," Love said "I got to do more. I think that's as simple as it can be. I need to just be more vocal, be more accountable for myself, and others. I think all the leaders, for sure, have that approach. That's what it takes. It's a long season. We're meshing. Right now, we're 3-3, 0-1 in the division, lot of games in front of us. So, we have to finish this second quarter of the season in a strong way."

Hall adding, "Obviously, things don't always go your way. But I felt like going down to the wire, we fought hard. We fought hard and that's one thing you can take away from it. We're going to play hard until the very last play. Just assessing this, we'll come back in on Monday and prepare for a really good Atlanta team."
