Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon Signs Contract Extension

Devon Witherspoon made it official on Monday, signing a four-year contract extension with the Seahawks.

In April, Devon Witherspoon was one of several Seahawks veterans to report on Day 1 of the voluntary offseason workout program, even though head coach Mike Macdonald made it clear to veterans that they were not expected to be there given how short the offseason was coming off of a Super Bowl victory.

Witherspoon, a three-time Pro-Bowl selection in as many NFL seasons, was also eligible for a contract extension that, at the time, had not yet happened, giving him all the more reason to stay home for the spring. But that's not Witherspoon's style.

"I'm here to let them know I'm the same person every day," Witherspoon said in April. "We've got to re-do what we did last year, we've got to restart, start from the beginning, and teach the basics first. You've got to be here to do that."

Witherspoon continued that approach throughout the offseason workout program and into training camp, giving the same energy and effort every day even while waiting to get an extension done, a team-first approach that was not lost on his teammates or coaches. And on Monday, Witherspoon and the Seahawks made it official that the standout cornerback will continue to be a foundational part of the team for years to come, with Witherspoon signing a four-year extension.

"Spoon is all the things—he's a great person, he's a great football player, he's a great teammate, he's a great leader," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after Saturday's preseason opener. "Those are the guys we want to be here. It's similar to Jax (Jaxon Smith-Njigba), these are foundational people to our team, and I'm extremely excited to get that foundation laid where we know Spoon is going to be here for the long haul. And we're also excited for the opportunity to reward him. This is a contract that we feel like he's earned, and we should celebrate it as well. It's also really exciting to know that we have foundational players that are going to be part of our team for a long time."

As general manager and president of football operations John Schneider said on Saturday's pregame show, the deal, which was agreed upon on Saturday morning, keeps him in Seattle for the next six seasons, adding onto the final year of his rookie deal and the fifth-year option for 2027.

"It's a win-win," Schneider said Saturday in an interview with Seahawks play-by-play man Steve Raible. "It's a great deal for Spoon, it's a great deal for the organization. He'll be with us for the next six years now. He's such a great guy, such a high-end competitor. Obviously, the instincts, the anticipation, but just the juice he brings and the way he treats everybody in the building, he's just a special, special person. I give (VP of football administration) Joey Laine a ton of credit, this took forever, Joey had a lot of patience with this. We worked through it, and finally got it done first thing this morning."
