GREEN BAY, Wis.—As Drew Lock rode a comically small children's bike down the road that connects Lambeau Field to the Packers' nearby practice fields, the Seahawks quarterback he may have chosen poorly.
"I shoulda picked a bigger bike," Lock said with a grin.
That mistake notwithstanding, it was clear Lock and other players were having a great time while taking part in a longstanding tradition at Packers training camp in which players borrow kids' bikes to ride to practice, with the owner of the bike often walking alongside carrying that player's helmet. It's a tradition that goes back to the late 1950s, according to the Packers website, though with the Seahawks in town for a joint practice Thursday, one notable difference were the number of Seahawks fans competing to get players' attention for an autograph, a picture, or to get a player to ride their bike.
"Incredible," Seahawks coach Sam Darnold said. "I didn't get a chance to raise the seat, that was a little tough, but we made it work. The kid that was holding my helmet walking next to me was incredible. He was a joy to be around. All the kids with their bikes, it's such a great tradition to be able to hang out with some of these kids who are the future of this game, just to be able to hang out with them and put a smile on their face."
Added Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald, "It was really cool to see the guys coming down the road with all the kids on the bikes and stuff, it's been a great experience for us."
While some bigger players like offensive and defensive linemen tested out the capabilities of those bikes, others, including defensive tackle Leonard Williams, opted for a ride in a golf cart, with Williams joking he was afraid of breaking a bike.
Another player who took a cart was cornerback Devon Witherspoon, though he took over driving duties, with a Packers staff member sliding over to the passenger seat while Witherspoon drove away with a big grin on his face.
Left tackle Charles Cross, meanwhile, started out riding a bike, then realized that at his size, it was easier to just pick it up and carry it the rest of the way.
And in the most adorable moment of the day, safety Julian Love walked with a 4-year-old fan as the two of them pushed her tiny blue bicycle together.
"I took a cart," Williams said. "I don't trust the wheels to support me. That's a really cool tradition, it's cool to see all the kids involved and all the fans, it feels like they're a part of it, helping the guys get to practice. I saw Julian, he wasn't actually on one of the bikes, he was just walking it because the girl had a little tricycle type of bike and he was just walking with her. I thought that was pretty cool."
