The Seahawks signed guard Tremayne Anchrum Jr. on Monday, adding competition to an interior offensive line that will potentially look quite a bit different in 2024.
Anchrum, who has spent the past four seasons with the Rams, primarily as a backup guard, gives the Seahawks another young option to compete at guard with last year's starting left guard Damien Lewis leaving in free agency, and with Phil Haynes, who opened the season starting at right guard, currently a free agent. Evan Brown, last year's starting center, is also a free agent.
Anchrum, 25, is the third offensive lineman signed by the Seahawks so far in free agency along with center Nick Harris and tackle George Fant. An All-ACC tackle as a senior at Clemson and a starter on the national championship winning team as a junior, Anchrum was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft.
In his four years with the Rams, Anchrum appeared in 31 games with one start, and he comes to Seattle looking for a chance to compete for a bigger role.
"I wanted to come somewhere where there was opportunity," he said after signing. "There's a lot of admiration for this organization, how they play ball. Coming from the Rams side, I've always watched them week in and week out because we play similar opponents and everything like that, and when I saw who they hired as a head coach, I was like, OK, they're retooling for a really good year and to be a really good franchise going forward. I want to be a part of something special."
Anchrum added that the Seahawks sold him on the opportunity to compete for a role in Seattle.
"They were like, 'There's opportunity,' he said. "I'm always one who's up for a fight, I'm up for competing. I've been competing my whole life in all areas, especially football. I want to come in and make a difference and make an impact."
Given his college background at tackle and NFL experience at guard, Anchrum describes himself as a versatile player who is, "Tough, physical, smart, a guy who loves ball… I'm versatile and I try to be useful anywhere I can."
Off the field, Anchrum made a big difference in the community, and was the Rams' nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2022.
