Seahawks Next Gen Stat Of The Week: O-Line Protects Sam Darnold, D-Line Brings The Pressure

The numbers behind one of the most telling stats in Sunday night’s Seahawks victory; pressure rate.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold had one of the best games of his NFL career in Sunday night's 38-14 win over the Commanders, completing all 16 first-half attempts and throwing four touchdown passes as the offense scored touchdowns on each of its first four possessions.

And for as sharp as Darnold was, he would be the first to point out that he wouldn't be able to put up performances like that without some great protection up front, and as has been the case throughout this season, the offensive line gave Darnold time to operate in the pocket.

Darnold did not take a sack on Sunday night, the third game this season in which the Seahawks have not allowed a sack, and the nine sacks Seattle has allowed this year are tied for the fewest in the NFL.

And against the Commanders, it wasn't just that Darnold wasn't getting sacked or taking hits, he was rarely even under duress. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Darnold was pressured on just three of 24 dropbacks, a career-low pressure rate of 12.5 percent.

With that time to throw, Darnold was not only 21 for 24 for 330 yards in the game, he was also 8 for 9 for 191 yards and four touchdowns on downfield passes, defined as passes that travel 10 or more air yards. All eight of those completions came in the first half, giving Darnold the most downfield yards and touchdowns by a player in the first half of a game this season.

On the other side of the equation, the Seahawks pass rush, which has been great all season, turned in another strong performance to make life difficult for Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Before Daniels left the game with an unfortunate injury late in the fourth quarter, he was pressured on 17 of 34 dropbacks, a 50-percent rate that was the highest of his career. While under pressure, Daniels was 4 for 8 for 59 yards with an interception, and was sacked four times. Seattle's pressure also forced Daniels to scramble on 38.2 percent of his dropbacks, another career high, though he was dangerous when scrambling, rushing for 47 yards on eight carries on those scrambles while completing 4 of 4 attempts for 58 yards with one sack.
