After a breakout 2025 season, in which he tied for the team lead with 7.0 sacks in the regular season, Byron Murphy II capped off his second year in the NFL with a bang, recording a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery in the Seahawks' dominant Super Bowl win over the Patriots.
And based off of what Murphy has shown a week in this year's training camp, the third-year defensive tackle was just getting started last season, when he began to emerge as one of the NFL's best young interior linemen.
"I really expect Murphy to have a spike in productivity rushing the passer," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. "He's earned it, but he does it every day, and it's great work for our offensive line. He's in a great spot."
Murphy, statistically speaking, had a quiet rookie season even though he earned a ton of praise from coaches and teammates, then last year the production started to come for the former first-round pick, though Murphy was also still doing the little things that don't show up on the stat sheet, frequently eating up double teams to help anchor one of the league's best run defenses, or to free up teammates for pass-rush success.
"The game slowed down a lot last year," Murphy said. "Also, recognizing things and knowing where my ops at on the field and knowing how guys want to set me at the line or how guys want to take sets on me. How they try to stop my power or speed or whatever that might be. Locking in too. Getting in the film room and studying my opponents."
The learning and improving clearly hasn't stopped for Murphy after Year 2—he has been a dominant force early in this year's camp, including some great one-on-one battles with fellow first-round pick Grey Zabel, who as a rookie was already one of the league's top young guards.
"I don't think there is a ceiling," Zabel said of Murphy's potential. "The guy's got me in a blender right now when we go one-on-ones and stuff. He's a great football player, and he's unbelievable at his craft. And the best part is the type of person he is. He's constantly wanting to get better, both of us are getting better at the same time. It's one of those deals where I'm just happy I don't have to block him on Sundays."
Murphy's top goal this season, he said, is to win football games, but he also wouldn't mind earning some of the individual accolades that a lot of people believe he was deserving last season. And if a week of training camp is any indication, Murphy could be on his way to big things this season.
"I'm holding myself to a higher standard this year," he said.
