The Seahawks held their seventh practice of training camp on a breezy day along the shores of Lake Washington, their final practice of the week before a day off Sunday. Here are five observations from Day 7 of camp:
1. A pair of second-year pass-catchers had big days.
On Friday, second-year tight end Elijah Arroyo was one of the standouts in the practice, making several impressive catches. A day later, Arroyo might have been even better, making several catches for big gains, including a 35-yard touchdown from Sam Darnold.
And Arroyo wasn't the only 2025 draft pick excelling in the passing game. Tory Horton, who is back from a leg injury that caused him to miss the second half of his rookie season, also had a big day that included multiple touchdown catches, including a leaping effort to beat good coverage on a back-shoulder throw, and catch and run over the middle that showed off his speed, with both scores coming on throws from Drew Lock.
2. Bud Clark is settling in nicely in his first NFL camp.
Safety Bud Clark, like any rookie, still has a lot of learning and growing to do before the start of the regular season, but the second-round pick out of TCU is off to a strong start in his first NFL camp.
As camp has gone on, his role has expanded, and with Julian Love getting an apparent veteran rest day, Clark got significant first-team reps on Saturday.
"It felt amazing," Clark said. "It was moving fast and I felt like I was moving fast with it. I adapted to it pretty well."
Clark has been used in multiple spots in camp so far, including in some sub packages, giving him a chance to show off his versatility.
"It's been different," he said. "I played down a little bit, but in the 'dime' spot I've always played to the strong (side). Being in the 'dime' has been good. I'm learning more, expanding my knowledge and it's helping me."
Clark's first training camp also included a chance to have a chat with Seahawks Legend Richard Sherman and get a photo with the former All-Pro corner, something Clark missed out on when Sherman visited practice during the offseason workout program.
"He was real about everything I asked," Clark said. "I was on (the) mic and everything like that, but I feel like we talked outside of that. He ended up giving me his number and different things like that. We got to chat and I loved it."
3. Seattle's leading trio of running backs are all having a good start to camp.
One of the big questions heading into camp is how the running back depth chart would shake out, and while that is far from settled, what is evident early in camp is that the Seahawks have a strong trio in George Holani, Emanuel Wilson and rookie Jadarian Price. All three have made plenty of plays in camp, including on Saturday, both in the running game and as pass-catchers. The way the trio is rotating with the offense, it seems pretty clear, at least at this point of camp, that there could be a role for all three in the offense, regardless of how the depth chart looks.
4. Your friendly reminder that Drew Lock can absolutely spin it.
Seattle's starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, is off to a great start in camp, and had several nice throws, including a long touchdown pass to Arroyo, a touchdown to Rashid Shaheed and a perfectly placed thrown down the right side that Jaxon Smith-Njigba hauled in with a spectacular toe-tapping catch.
But as impressive as Darnold has been since joining the team last year, it's worth the occasional reminder that the Seahawks have a very, very talented backup in Drew Lock. Lock is heading into his fourth season with the Seahawks since arriving in the 2022 trade that sent Russell Wilson to Denver—Lock spent the 2024 season with the Giants before returning to Seattle—and on Saturday, the arm talent that made him a second-round pick in 2019 was on full display, showing just how strong Seattle's quarterback depth is, with third stringer Jalen Milroe also having another strong practice.
Lock's big day got started with a touchdown drive that he capped by hitting Horton with a back-shoulder throw for a touchdown. Not long after that drive, Lock again hit Horton with a dart over the middle that the speedy second-year receiver turned into a touchdown. Lock's strong showing also included a touchdown pass to receiver Irv Charles, and another well-placed throw over the middle to Emanuel Wilson for a big gain.
5. Saturday's practice didn't include an expected flyover from the Blue Angels, but the Seahawks did get to meet with the pilots this weekend.
In any other year, a training camp practice on the first weekend of August would include several flybys from the Blue Angels, who perform in Seattle each year as part of Seafair Weekend. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case on Saturday, as the show was cancelled due to winds.
"You definitely notice them," guard Grey Zabel said of the earlier visits on Thursday and Friday, adding that the cancelled show Saturday was, "a win-lose situation. It sucks they couldn't fly over today, but at the same time, it's pretty nice having a breeze out at practice for two-and-a-half hours."
Even so, players got to see the planes in the air on Thursday and Friday, and they also got a visit from the Blue Angel pilots, who stopped by the Virginia Mason Athletic Center on Friday.
"They're remarkable," Zabel said. "The attention to detail. I didn't really know that much about them, then they played a video and stuff, and it's so cool to see what they do, how they perform, how they travel, the new obstacles and challenges they have for every show. I watched some YouTube videos on them last night, it's pretty sweet. They're definitely pretty high in my book, for sure."
Asked if he would ever go up in a Blue Angel jet, Zabel said, "Yeah, I just don't think I'd fit in a fighter jet. I think I'd be too tall, too wide. It'd be super cool, Top Gun is like my favorite movie of all time. So absolutely, if they had a cockpit big enough."
Veteran defensive tackle Jarran Reed added, when asked about what they learned from the visit, "Just about how they attack the day, how they go and debrief, how they are very critical of themselves, and how they depend on each other. It's the same kind of rules and morals that we have out here on our team."
