The Seahawks addressed a need at quarterback, agreeing to a trade for former Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell on Thursday in a swap of multiple draft picks, pending a physical.

The Seahawks are sending one of their two third-round picks (No. 78 overall) and a fifth-rounder (No. 152) to Washington in exchange for Howell, a fourth-round pick (No. 102) and a sixth-round pick (No. 179). The Seahawks still have another third-round pick, No. 81 overall, which they acquired in a trade with Denver during last year's draft.

Howell, a 2022 fifth-round pick out of North Carolina, took over the starting job in Washington in his second season and started all 17 games, finishing with a league-high 612 passes attempts, 388 completions (63.4 percent), 21 touchdowns, 21 interceptions and a 78.9 passer rating. Howell also rushed for 263 yards and five touchdowns on 48 carries.

The 23-year-old Howell gives the Seahawks an experienced option to back up Pro-Bowl quarterback Geno Smith after losing Drew Lock in free agency.
