When DeMarcus Lawrence signed with the Seahawks in March, the 12th-year veteran made it known that, despite what some people might have thought, he had "a lot more in the tank, so there's isn't any need to stop now."
He also said he came to Seattle to compete for a Super Bowl, saying the Seahawks had the pieces in place to chase that goal that alluded him in his 11 seasons in Dallas.
And while the Seahawks still have work to do to reach that ultimate goal, things are going about as well as Lawrence possibly could have drawn it up back in March when he made that decision to sign with Seattle.
"I expected exactly what I said, to be a part of a Super Bowl team," said Lawrence, who this week was named a Pro Bowler for the fifth time in his career. "The Lord partnered with my words; everything is coming to fruition. I'm excited about the journey, excited to be here, and got to continue to fight the good fight."
While the Seahawks were a good team in their first year under Mike Macdonald, barely missing the playoffs with a 10-7 record, they were hardly considered Super Bowl favorites heading into 2025, at least not to those outside of the building, but Lawrence saw something special when he looked at Seattle as a possible free-agent destination.
"All the measurables were there," Lawrence said. "We've got a great head coach, defensive minded head coach, a stacked defense, and were just missing a couple of key weapons, a quarterback, me—no, I'm just playing—but, yeah, I saw all the weapons that Seattle had, and I just wanted to be a part of a group like that."
The Seahawks got that quarterback when they signed Sam Darnold, and with other key additions like Cooper Kupp and a change at offensive coordinator, with Klint Kubiak taking over, Seattle's offense has done its part along with the defense and special teams, which has the Seahawks at 12-3 and in position to earn the NFC's top seed if they can win their final two games.
"It's definitely been rejuvenating, being able to be in a new city under new leadership, but also a new group of guys that's hungry just as well as you," Lawrence said. "You have all the talent in the world; it's just about going out there and doing it week in and week out. I think that's the special part about the whole journey is we're able to go in and do it week in and week out and still be in here and have fun."
And just as Lawrence is enjoying his decision to sign with Seattle, the Seahawks are thrilled to have added him, gaining not just a playmaker on defense but a veteran leader who helps set the tone with a work ethic that led to Macdonald calling him, “the best drill player I've ever seen in my life" during training camp. Lawrence's 10 tackles for loss are tied for the most on the team, while his 18 quarterback hits rank second to Williams. Lawrence has also contributed 5.0 sacks, 46 tackles, two forced fumbles, one of which Macdonald described as “probably my new favorite play of all time,” and a pair of touchdowns scored on fumble recovery returns in a Week 10 win over the Cardinals, helping him earn NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
"That's just Law," said defensive coordinator Aden Durde, who was Dallas' defensive line coach for two of Lawrence's Pro Bowl seasons with the Cowboys. "He's a great football player, the ball finds him, he makes plays, he plays the game it's meant to be played. I'm so happy for him and so proud of him."
Added defensive tackle Leonard Williams, another of Seattle's six Pro-Bowl selections, "He's been a huge addition on this team. One of my favorite additions this year, obviously, because he plays next to me and he plays on the defensive side of the ball. He has a big impact on me and on his defense, his leadership, his effort, and his ball skills are elite."
