DeMarcus Lawrence Is 'The Epitome' Of What The Seahawks Want To Be

Linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence continues to prove to be an important part of Seattle’s defense in 26-0 win over the Vikings.

Just three weeks ago, DeMarcus Lawrence returned two fumbles for touchdowns and was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for that performance. This week against the Vikings, Lawrence had 1.0 sack, put pressure on Vikings quarterback Max Brosmer that forced an ill-advised pass that led to a pick-six and forced a fumble, that head coach Mike Macdonald said is his new favorite play.

On the play where he caused the forced fumble, Lawrence wanted to get to Vikings running back Aaron Jones Sr. quickly and in doing so, ran past him, and was shoved by Jones ultimately falling to the ground. Lawrence was able to quickly get back to his feet and run from about eight yards behind Jones to force a fumble that safety Ty Okada recovered.

"I wanted to do a hit call on the running back," Lawrence said. "I knew the ball was coming out quick. As soon as I did the hit call, he actually gave me a little thump, so I fell, but playing football all the years that I've played, that's a hot stove, so you got to get up fast. Once I got up and re-traced, the ball carrier was there; attack it."

Macdonald said, "DeMarcus Lawrence's forced fumble is probably my new favorite play of all time. It's just an incredible, incredible play. I just saw this blur coming down and just violently attack the ball. It's been such of a point of emphasis and to see him do that was really great."

He added, "Unbelievable. Just plays like a blur of a human. It's on the other side of the field, and then you're like holy crap he's going to make the play. Then you see him coming down with the right hand and it's like, okay. Hopefully recovered the ball. It was awesome."

The 12-year vet serves as an example for younger players of what it means to play "Seahawks football."

"I feel like he's the epitome of what we want to be," linebacker Drake Thomas, who had 0.5 sack, five tackles and two quarterback hits, said. "He's a dog. Whatever he does, he goes all out, 100 percent. He's selfless. He wants to win, and he's a tough, physical football player and he brings out the life on the field."

Safety Coby Bryant said, "Besides him being an old guy, he's been a vet and someone that's been making plays each and every week consistently and being a leader as well too."

On Sunday, Lawrence also forced Brosmer to make a bad throw.

"That's one of these things that DeMarcus does probably better than anybody I've been around," Macdonald said. "He plays with anticipation and understands situational football at an incredibly high level. Fourth-and-one in a run-or-pass type of situation and reads it, it's a movement, and that's not part of his technique. That's just him being a great football player and understanding situational ball. Just an awesome play."

So far this season, Lawrence has proved to be an important piece to Seattle's very good defense and nothing about what he's shown this year has surprised Macdonald.

"AD (Aden Durde) loved him," he said. "We knew he'd fit in great with our culture. We knew he'd add to it. And I think that's probably the coolest thing is how well that group, the defensive line room and our defense has really meshed and grown together, which is it's just a fun group to be around every day and that's the environment we're trying to create. And the players have done that. The ones have done it every day and we talk about what's fun and what's not fun. What's fun is going to work and having great days with the guys you work with and trying to achieve a goal together."

Byron Murphy II said, "D Law, he plays a big part in this defense. He's one of the captains on our defense. He keeps us going. He's always talking to us before the game, before we take the field."
