LANDOVER, Md.—A first-career interception, a first-career touchdown and a forced fumble were some of the biggest plays of the Seahawks' 38-14 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football. The one thing all of those plays have in common is that they were made by players who have been called up from the practice squad to the active roster, either for this game or at some point this season.
On Sunday, Seattle was dealing with injuries at receiver which meant Cody White and Ricky White III were elevated from the practice squad for the game. White, as it seems to always be the case when he gets his opportunity, made the most of it by scoring his first-career touchdown.
"Every time I get a shot, I'm making a big play," White said. "Making a touchdown, blocked punt, whatever it is. I'm doing all I can to make sure that the team is playing well and that we're going out there and getting wins."
As White referred to, he has made big plays, including a blocked punt and a long reception down the sideline in one game last season, when he was called up from the practice squad.
On his first-career touchdown, White said, "Growing up as a kid, you want to have that first touchdown. It took me a little while in my career, but nothing's sweeter than getting that first touchdown for sure."
He added that getting the touchdown felt, "Ten times whatever I thought it was going to feel like."
AJ Barner, who had three receptions for 24 yards and a rushing touchdown on Sunday said, "Cody's the guy that's been in the league for some time now and we know when Cody plays, there's no drop off. Super stoked for Cody when he had that big play, but I expect nothing less from him."
Quarterback Sam Darnold added, "Excited. Excited. We know Cody is a baller. Anytime he's out there on the field, he's making a play, so I'm just excited he's on our team. A great person, and his work ethic is through the roof, you know, it's great to see him out there, balling."
White is just one example of the kind of team head coach Mike Macdonald is building.
"This is the stuff that we preach on how we train our guys," Macdonald said. "We're really bringing the ready squad and the 70 to life here. That's probably what I'm most proud of is the guys stepping in, upholding the standard, the mentality of the team."
Ty Okada, who has been playing in place of an injured Julian Love also had a career first today, hauling in a interception for the first time in his career.
"Coach put us in a great call," Okada said. "We were able to get pressure on the quarterback. Shout out to everybody else. It takes all eleven out there at the same time."
He added, "It means a lot to just have the faith from the coaching staff and the guys on the team. Julian's (Love) played a pivotal role in my success."
Despite Love's injury, he has stayed keyed in and is helping Okada however he can.
"He's always talking to me on the sidelines about what he's seeing, how I can play things," Okada said. "Then on a day-to-day basis, what he's seeing on film. He prepares like he's playing each week. And so to have a leader like that and to have him by my side, helping me out, day in and day out has been extremely helpful."
For Macdonald, it's Okada's attitude and attention to detail that stands out the most.
"I know he's been starting for us here for a minute, and we're going to need him to keep playing great football for us while [S] Julian's [Love] out. When I think about Ty, I think about his attitude every day in the building. I think about his attention to detail in the game plan. I think about how great of a teammate he is and how much he loves the guys next to him, and its 100 percent effort all the time. And you got a bunch of guys like that on your team and on your defense. It's pretty cool, and it makes it a really fun group to coach."
Also contributing to Seattle's success on Sunday was defensive tackle Brandon Pili, who forced a fumble during a kickoff return.
Macdonald said, "John (Schneider) and I were just laughing when Jay (Harbaugh) said, 'Well now we could play Brandon Pili on the kickoff team.' I tried to take a deep breath and figure out what the heck was going on. Who puts a defensive tackle on kickoff team? Who's bought in to the role and goes out and it's kind of like ball finds energy kind of thing. You go out, have a great attitude, you prepare the right way, do your job to 100 percent of your ability and it's funny how things work out like that, but happy for Brandon."
While Macdonald didn't share details on exactly why 6-foot-3, 334 pound Pili was on kickoff, he said, "Shoutout to Jay and Fitz on how they strategize and use our whole roster."
The use of players on the roster and putting them in positions to make plays like that, according to Barner, is just a credit to the front office and coaching staff. "It just shows, one, the job that the front office does, and our head coach, in getting guys here and getting them prepared and ready to go and two, the leadership that we have for guys to be able to step up and know what the expectation is."
All season, Macdonald has talked about the importance of every single player on the roster, and Sunday night just reinforced that.
"Any guy for ready squad, active roster, you always have to stay ready," White said. "Your number can get called at any moment. I didn't think I was playing to start this week, and then later in the week, I ended up finding out I was starting. You always have to be ready for your opportunity and I feel like I did a good job with that tonight."
Okada added, "That's exactly what it is. Everybody on the roster, from top to bottom, prepares each week like they're going to be out there starting. And so I think just it's a bunch of guys that are super hungry and want to want to prove themselves. And when given the opportunity they capitalize on them."
